Finn submitted six images, receiving awards for Best of Show, Best of Category, two Awards of Excellence, and four Awards of Merit. All six featured clients from the Dexter-Ann Arbor area and Grand Rapids.
When creating the 2009 DPPA Best of Show image, "Soul Shoes," Finn had an artistic epiphany - lining up four pairs of shoes brought for outfit changes. The result, a pair of feet standing among the shoes, allows the viewer to imagine what it must be like to have a world of choices at their feet.
"Playing the Angles," featuring another local high school senior, received recognition from the judges with its modern and non-traditional composition. Finn's other entries included an engagement portrait ( "Joyride"), an infant portrait ("In His Hands"), an editorial-style senior portrait ("Coffee Break"), and a senior portrait ("Checkmate").
All images were created in the Ann Arbor area.
Two of the images, "Joyride" and "Coffee Break," were created on location in Dexter. "Joyride" depicts an engaged couple in their convertible, and was taken on the stretch of Baker road between Main Street and Marshall Road. "Coffee Break" was created in downtown Dexter, inside Main Street's Bearclaw Coffee.
"I was extremely surprised when I realized 'Soul Shoes' won Best of Show," Finn said, "especially considering the odds of winning Best of Show two years in a row."
Last year, Finn's photograph of a white egret was selected for Best of Show. When entering the DPPA competition, Finn made a decision that all six of her entries would be real client portraits. There is no greater reward than being able to consistently provide her clients with excellent images.
