St. Andrew's United Church of Christ, Dexter, celebrates its 125th Anniversary with special events in October. Shown here are the original 1853 church, which is now the Dexter Historical Museum, and the current church, just a parking lot away, built in 1974.
Special events during the Anniversary Month include a march, Sunday, Oct. 12, from the center of the Village of Dexter, up the hill to the church at 7610 Ann Arbor Road, recreating the march members of the first congregation took for the first service in their new church which stood at the same site. The march will begin at approximately 9:45 a.m. and arrive for services at 10:15 a.m. celebrating the Anniversary event. Following the service a celebration dinner will be served at noon in the Social Hall attached to the church. Former ministers and dignitaries from the United Church will be present. All former members are invited to attend.
The Anniversary Celebration will conclude on Thursday, Oct. 16 with the 87th Annual Sauerkraut Supper. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 5 to 12 years. Under 5 are free. The family style meal includes pork roast, sauerkraut, kniffles, mashed potatoes and gravy and homemade pie. Serving begins at 4:30 p.m. and carryout is available. Serving ends at 7:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased by calling (734) 426-8610 or at the church, Monday through Thursday between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. A Country Store featuring baked goods and crafts will also be offered.
Book sale
The monthly used book sales held by the Friends of the Dexter District Library will resume on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The sale will feature a large collection of cookbooks, many beautiful children's books and books on horses and golf.
October Town Hall meeting
The village has laid out a schedule for the promotion of their upcoming town hall meeting, which is currently scheduled for Oct. 16.
Throughout the month of October, the Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce will also assist with promoting the meeting, which drew a packed house earlier this year to discuss the topic of cityhood.
