"I'm very excited about our new programs for this fall, especially our "afterschool specials," said Karen Persello, director of Youth and Teen Services.
"Chelsea students normally flock to the library after school; this fall they will find something new to do here nearly every day of the week, from Legos-building to homework help, from the 6-11 Club to the new middle school clubs."
For more information on these or any of other fall program talk to a librarian, call the library at 475-8732 or check the library's Web site, www.chelsea.lib.mi.us.
Some of the more notable programs for children include "I Need to Read," an exciting new program of speakers from the community and beyond that explores the need for reading in their careers. For ages 6 and up.
Last Monday of every month 4-5 p.m., McKune Registration
Nov. 24: Former NASA astronaut Anthony England
Recruited in 1979 as a scientist-astronaut, England served as a support crewman for Apollo 13 and 16; in 1985, he went into space on the shuttle Challenger.
On his eight-day mission, he performed many experiments and flew the shuttle. He is currently a professor in the University of Michigan Engineering Department.
A series of special programs for various ages is set for September, October and November:
A special storytime celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with stories and songs in both Spanish and English. For all ages.
Oct. 8 Internet Safety for Parents (with the Washtenaw Area Council for Children) 7-8 p.m., McKune Drop-in
As the number of children using the Internet continues to grow, so does their risk of exposure to the negative aspects of online use, including pornography, invasion of privacy and online predators.
The Washtenaw Area Council for Children hopes to combat this by providing information to parents.
This parent session will include information on social networking sites, instant messaging (IM), privacy, predators, cyber-bullying and many other Internet topics parents want to know about.
Oct. 29 Chills in Chelsea Halloween Party 6:30-8 p.m., McKune Registration
Celebrate all things spooky and terrifying in this party for kids ages 7-12. We'll tell scary stories, do creepy crafts and of course, eat treats! Goody bags for the first 30 to come in costume.
Nov. 15 Thomas the Tank Engine Party 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., McKune Registration
Who loves trains? Who doesn't? Celebrate our favorite storytime train with fun activities, crafts, snacks and even a surprise visitor. For ages 3-6.
For teens, there are even more special programs lined up for the fall.
