Whippets prepare for season

The Washtenaw Whippets field hockey team is currently preparing for its 2008 season.

Pre-season practice begins Aug. 11 and will continue for two weeks Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. Practices will be held at the Whippets' new home field behind Chelsea's Pierce Lake Elementary School.
The Whippets are comprised of players from throughout Washtenaw County, including girls from Chelsea, Dexter, Manchester and Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard.
The Whippets open their season Aug. 25 competing in a tournament in East Grand Rapids. On Aug. 28, the squad heads out of state to Ohio taking on Maumee Valley.
This year, the Whippets will play in Division II. There are four divisions in the Michigan High School Field Hockey League.
This season, the Whippets will play home and away games against teams in their division. Squads in Washtenaw's division include Bloomfield Hills Academy of the Sacred Heart, Grosse Pointe University-Liggett, Farmington Hills Mercy and Birmingham Detroit Country Day.
Also included in the Whippets' fall schedule this season include division games against Saline, Novi, Grosse Pointe South, Ann Arbor Huron and Dearborn.
There are currently openings for additional players to compete on the Whippets' varsity and JV teams. Experience is not necessary.
