The locals opened with a 10-5 loss to eventual runner-up Jackson Southwest in a game much closer than the final score indicated. They then responded with a 25-5 mercy-rule victory over Jackson Southeast before losing to a talented Lincoln squad, 5-2, in an elimination game.
Fourteen teams, including champion Dexter Maroon, participated in the 13-day tournament, which was hosted by Dexter Little League at both Mill Creek Middle School and Dexter High School.
Dexter White manager Jeremy Hilobuk admitted that his team received a difficult draw. Not only was Southwest a tough opener, Lincoln was not a typical early elimination-game opponent. Lincoln was knocked into the losers' bracket after losing its first game to Dexter Maroon.
Here are the highlights from Dexter White's district games:
Jackson Southwest 10, Dexter White 5 - Chase Rojeck pitched five solid innings for Dexter, which trailed by only one run in the fifth inning. Brenden Ritter and Seth Jaimez contributed two hits each for the locals, while teammate Blake Leonard had a hit and scored two runs.
Dexter White 25, Jackson Southeast 5 - It was a total team effort at the plate as Dexter scored early and often. Michael Martinez and Leonard reached base five and four times, respectively. Joey Hiser collected two hits and scored three runs, while Michael Sturza stroked a two-run double. Defensively, Dexter received strong pitching from Trevor Hilobuk, Sturza and Ritter and outstanding fielding efforts from Zach McKenzie and Travis Spuller.
Lincoln 5, Dexter White 2 - Sturza cranked two doubles and scored a run to keep the locals close. Ritter added two hits, while Hunter Edwards and Rojeck added one safety apiece. Pitching for Dexter were Sturza, Leonard and Jaimez.
