Louis Rose
Chelsea
Louis Rose of Chelsea passed away on July 22, 2008. He was 87.
Formerly of San Diego and Detroit, Mr. Rose was born Jan. 10, 1921 in Detroit. He was a proud member of IBEW Local 58 and recently received his 65 year pin. He retired from City of Detroit Electrical Inspection Division as a supervising inspector and was a WWII Navy veteran. Married to his beloved Ruth (Mustonen) for 50 years, who predeceased him by 13 years. Together, they were elegant ballroom dancers and joyful square dancers. Lou was proud that he could build or fix anything. Known for his teasing humor and ever-present cigar, he built a summer home in Northern Michigan where he nearly perfected the art of fly fishing. Also an accomplished bowler, Lou took up golf after he retired. In retirement, Lou spent summers in Michigan and winters in San Diego, proclaiming he had the best of both worlds. Lou moved to The Pines in April 2006.
He is survived by two daughters, Tina (Bob) Patterson of Strockbridge, Lori Rose (Phil) Gianatasio of Marblehead, Mass.; one son, Barry "Peter" Rose of Detroit; two granddaughters, Rachel and Chloe Gianatasio of Marblehead; two grandsons, Trevor Patterson of Fairfield NJ and Andrew Patterson of Thailand; several nieces and nephews, special friend Pearl Lilyard of Virginia, and his adoring golden retriever "Mo." No public services. Burial at Oak Grove East Cemetery, Chelsea. Arrangements by Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea. The family requests donations to Arbor Hospice or the Chelsea Senior Activities Center.
David E. Miller
Grass Lake
David E. Miller of Grass Lake died Saturday, July 26, 2008 at his daughter's home in Pinckney. He was 69.
He was born Oct. 21, 1938 in Ann Arbor, the son of Marvin E. and Pauline M. (Davison) Miller.
David served in the US Marines from 1956-58. He worked for RF Day Construction until his retirement. He was also a former part-owner of Ann Arbor Welding Supply.
Survivors include two daughters, Susan Miller of Pinckney and Kristen (Jim) Boccher of Dexter; one brother, Donald M. (Angela) Miller of Grass Lake; two grandchildren, Jack Boccher and Michael Lams. David was formerly married to Barbara (Hartman) Andres. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Michelle "Shelly" in 1980, and his parents.
The family will receive friends Thursday, July 31, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea. Graveside Services will be Friday, Aug. 1, 10 a.m. at Bethlehem Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
Dale Barker
Chelsea
Dale Barker of Chelsea died suddenly Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at Chelsea Community Hospital. He was 91.
He was born May 13, 1917 in Shepherd, Mich., the son of Charles and Pearl (Wilson) Barker.
Dale was a World War II veteran serving in the Air Force. He worked 21 years at Chrysler, retiring in 1975. He was a member of the American Legion and the UAW.
On July 8, 1946, he married Norma M. Girven in Lansing, and she survives. Other survivors include two sons, Douglas (Sheila) Barker of Jackson, Dennis (Melinda) Barker of Swartz Creek; a daughter, Debra Barker of Hartland; two grandchildren, Dawn and Denise; 5 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Friday, July 25, 2008, at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Rev. James Watson officiating. Burial was at Salt River Cemetery in Shepherd. The family received friends Thursday evening. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion .
Robert Stoddard Martin
Chelsea
A devoted spouse, father and grandfather, Robert Stoddard (Bob) Martin died in Chelsea on July 23, 2008. He was 85.
Bob was born on Feb. 19, 1923 in Staten Island, NY, the son of Robert V.E. and Henrietta (Stoddard) Martin, the eldest of three children. Ann Martin Lambertson of Burlingame, Calif. survives him. His brother Stoddard Martin of Bellwood, Penn. predeceased him. His family moved to Webster Groves, Mo. in 1939. In 1940, he met Margaret (Pat) Roth through the Webster Groves Presbyterian Church where her father taught Sunday School. On Aug. 2, 1944, they were married there. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, his children: Nancy M. (Bernard, deceased) Podurgiel of Norwich, Conn., Sallie M. (Steven) Foley of Ann Arbor, Martha M. (Christopher) Conner of El Cerrito, Calif. and David R. (Nicole) Martin of Bellaire, Mich., his grandchildren: Rebecca P. Ramirez, Bernard J. Podurgiel, Debra P. Wilson and Jennifer A. Podurgiel, Jessica, Lauren, and Robert Foley, Whitaker and Margaret Martin, Bryce and Connor Chapman, and four great-grandchildren.
Bob graduated from Purdue University in 1947 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He served in the U. S. Army as a staff sergeant in the Philippines during WW II. His career with Caterpillar Tractor Company began in Peoria, Ill., and included moves to Jacksonville, Fla., Potomac, Md. and St. Louis, Mo. He specialized in the sales and installation of diesel power generation units. For many years, Bob was a deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher in the Presbyterian church. He was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Ann Arbor, an associate member of the Church in the Hills (Presbyterian), Bellaire, and, at the time of his passing, a member of the First United Methodist Church of Chelsea. As a youth, Bob was active in the Boy Scouts of America, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. His life-long love of sailing began as a Sea Scout in that organization and continued with the summer tradition of enjoying Torch Lake, Mich. He was an active member of the Torch Lake Yacht & Country Club, serving on the board of directors and as commodore. He created a curriculum and initiated a sailing school there. In retirement Bob and Pat moved to Ann Arbor, where he volunteered as a SCORE counselor. In 2003, they moved to Silver Maples Senior Retirement Community in Chelsea. He enjoyed tennis, skiing and blacksmithing. In recent years, he volunteered each summer at YMCA Camp Hayo-Went-Ha on Torch Lake, a wilderness adventure camp for boys and young men.
Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist Church of Chelsea on July 29, 2008. Memorial donations may be made to the "Robert S. Martin Endowment Fund" at YMCA Camp Hayo-Went-Ha (919 N.E. Torch Lake Drive, Central Lake, MI 49622). Bob established the Hayo-Went-Ha Clean Water Fund to preserve the pristine shoreline of his beloved lake, ensuring the camp's 104 year stewardship. Or, donations may be given to the First United Methodist Church of Chelsea (129 Park Street, Chelsea, MI 48118) or to Silver Maples Endowment Fund (100 Silver Maples Drive, Chelsea, MI 48118). Burial, at the convenience of the family, will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Bellaire, Mich. Arrangements by Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea.
Lorraine Ruth Aiken
Ann Arbor
Lorraine Ruth Aiken of Ann Arbor, formerly of Holiday, Fla., died Thursday, July 24, 2008 in Saline. She was 83.
She was born July 14, 1925 in Iron River, Mich., the daughter of William and Gertrude Marie (Tackmier) LaVeau. Lorraine was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Dexter, the Dexter American Legion Auxiliary, and the Ann Arbor Eagles. On May 30, 1943, she married William Aiken, Jr. in Stambaugh, Mich., and he preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 1992. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara (Lewis) Feeman of Dexter, and Debbie (Mel) Carreira of Hudson, Fla..; a sister, Marguerite (Albert) Angeli of Iron River; 3 grandchildren, Danny (Tracy) Feeman, Melissa Feeman, Eric (Valerie) Boham, and Chad (Jen) Boham; 7 great-grandchildren, Ed Feeman, Nicole Feeman, Ashlee Feeman, Zach Feeman, Taylor Feeman, Trevor Feeman, and Vanden Boham; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Billy Aiken, and a grandson, Keith Feeman.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 16, 1 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, Dexter, with Rev. Mark Porinsky officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Dexter. Memorial contributions may be made to Lorraine's family. Arrangements by Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea.
Michael James Griffith
Chelsea
Michael James Griffith of Chelsea died Friday, July 25, 2008 at his home. He was 21.
He was born on July 14, 1987 in Ann Arbor, the son of James and Patricia (Lunwick) Griffith.
Michael graduated from Chelsea High School in 2005 and played in the Chelsea High School band. Music production was a favorite, and he was attending Washtenaw Community College for that degree.
Surviving are his parents of Chelsea, and one brother Robert A. Griffith of Chelsea; paternal grandmother
Marge (Jerry) Ehnert of Phoenix, three uncles, two aunts and three cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Howard (Mildred) Lunwick, and his paternal grandfather, Edwin Griffith.
A private service will be held at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea. Expressions of sympathy can
be made to the charity of one's choice.
Sally Jane Belote
Saline
Sally Jane Belote of Saline passed away Friday, July 18, 2008, at the Hospice unit of the Evangelical Home of Saline. She was 79.
She was born May 18, 1929, the daughter of the late John and Myrtle (Johnson) Spoutz. On June 21, 1951 she was married to James Morehouse Belote of Ann Arbor, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 16, 1987. Sally was a life long member of the Catholic Church, most recently attending St. Andrew Catholic Church in Saline. She grew up in Detroit, and then attended the University of Michigan, earning a BS degree, then taught for one year in the Detroit schools 3rd and 4th grades. Sally had many interests during her life, most of which included her family. She was a den mother for cub scouts in Dexter, she became trained as a ceramics teacher, and she volunteered at the Chelsea Methodist home.
Her survivors include one Brother John (Linda) Spoutz, and two sisters; Lenore A. Wilkie, and Mary E. Spoutz, seven children: Sally A. (David) West, Christi L. (Dennis) Crawford, Barbara J. (Charlie) Moelaart, Patricia K. (Stanley) Lambarth, James J. ( Barbara) Belote, Dale E. (Timothy) Wheeler, William J. (Cory) Belote, 16 Grandchildren: Keith (Mikkee) West, Shannon (Matt) Runyan, Jessica (Chris) Meyers, Sean Crawford, Scott Stone, Brian Stone, Sarah (Matthew) Mayhew, Katherine Lambarth, Linda Lambarth, Tonya Belote, Benjamin Belote, Addy Brown, Liam Belote, Evan Belote, Owen Belote, and Jennifer (Kevin) Dettling and 3 great-grandchildren. Memorial visitation will be held on Friday Aug 22, 2008 from 10 a.m. until the time of the Memorial Mass of the Resurrection at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Saline with Rev. Fr. Gordon P. Reigle, Celebrant.
Memorials and gifts may be made to Arbor Hospice or St. Andrew Catholic Church and envelopes will be available at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home, Saline.
Walter Kalmbach, Jr.
A memorial service for Walter Kalmbach will be held Aug. 9, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. at the Salem Grove U.M.C., 3320 Notten Road in Grass Lake.
