Piranhas feast on Saline

The Dexter Community Aquatics Club Piranhas battled the Saline Stingrays for bragging rights in the water this past weekend at the Dexter Community pool. The Piranhas defeated Saline 403-395 for the combined swim and dive meets.

To begin last Saturday's swimming festivities, the boys' 8-years-old and younger division 100 medley relay swam to a third-place finish with a time of 2:13.01. The team was made up of Nick Fileccia, William Bergdolt, Thomas Stanton, and Clayton Kinnard. Following this race was the girls' side of the same age group, with Annette Schultz, Dani Waidley Amelia Kinnard, and Vedhika Raghunathan, stopping the clock in 1:29.63, good enough for third place.

In the 25 freestyle, Nick Fileccia placed fourth, clocking in at 30.98. Coming in right behind him was Stephen Assenmacher in fifth place and Clayton Kinnard in sixth. In the girls' 25 freestyle, Annette Schultz was touched out settling for second place in 16.29. Taking fourth place was Popi Vorias, with Kaitlin Helmholtz hot on her heels in sixth place.

For the breaststroke portion of the morning, Will Bergdolt was fourth in 31.17. Touching right after Bergdolt was Thomas Stanton and Stephen Assenmacher, who each earned fifth and sixth, respectively. Second was once again the place DCAC would have to settle for, with Amelia Kinnard hitting the wall with a time of 24.23. In fourth place was Heather Brouwer, while Raghunathan earned sixth place. In the 100 freestyle relay, the boys' team of Stanton, Bergdolt, Assenmacher and Fileccia swam to a third-place finish in 1:53.20. In the girls' race, 1:21.12 was the second place earning time that was achieved by the combination of Annelise Luoma, Kinnard, Raghunathan and Schultz.

The 9- through 10-year-old races were started by the boys' 100 medley relay. Ryan Stanton led the team off while Jonathan King, Matthew Bergdolt, and Ethan Reynolds quickly followed swimming to first place in 1:14.22. The girls' squad of Gretchen Schultz, Amanda Keenan, Kaylee Witte and Ashley Sobczak placed second with a time of 1:20.73.

Keeping up with the first-place finishes, Ryan Stanton earned the top honor in the 50 freestyle with a personal best clocking of 31.31. Reynolds and Bergdolt earned second and fourth, respectively. In the girls' heats of the freestyle, Sobczak claimed first for her team in 33.06. She was followed by teammates Allison Schreider in third place and Ally Hauke in fourth place.

In the breaststroke section of the meet, Peter Assenmacher placed second in 49.06 to lead the boys' squad, while King and Griffin Beck ended up third and fourth, respectively. The girls stepped up to the blocks next with Keenan fourth in 49.44, Witte fifth and Schultz sixth.

Up next for the 9- through 10-year-olds was the 200 freestyle relay. Once again, the boys' squad took the top honor of first place with a time of 2:18.41. The team was made up of Peter Assenmacher, Matthew Bergdolt, Ryan Stanton and Reynolds. In the girls' relay, Witte, Schultz, Keenan and Sobczak finished second in 2:31.63.

In the 11- through 12-year-old division, the boys' 200 medley relay of Zach Martell, David Alday, Andrew Pek, and Matthew Caister finished first in 2:20.66. The girls' team of Jenna Luoma, Emily Assenmacher, Laura Stanton, and Kylie Boyd touched second with a time of 2:21.83.

In the boys' 50 freestyle, Matthew Caister placed first in 29.03, while Andrew Pek was second and Martell fourth. In the girls' races, Luoma finished second in 29.70, while Stanton was third and Brooke Hartman sixth.

In the boys' 50 breaststroke event, Alday placed first in 38.43, while Hauke was second and Kothari sixth. In the girls' event, Emily Assenmacher left the rest of the swimmers in her wake finishing first in 40.20. Audrey Sleder came in third, while Boyd was fifth.In the last relay for this age group, Mike Hauke, Andrew Pek, Alday and Caister placed first in 2:01.96. In the girls' race Luoma, Sleder, Boyd and Stanton touched second in 2:07.10.

Stephen Sobczak was the first one in the water for the 13- through 14-year-old age group, swimming for the boys 200 medley relay with teammates Logan Simpson, John Eber, and Joey Pek. First place was awarded to the foursome with a time of 2:07.89. The girls' group stepped up next and also swam straight to first, with a time of 2:23.20. The squad consisted of Ella Firnhaber, Chante Liu, Brianna Tingley and Caroline Rossini. In the 50 freestyle, Stephen Sobczak gave it his all and touched out his competition snagging first in 25.10. Pek was hot on his heels earning third, with Charlie Butler claiming fourth for his team. The girl swimmers earned some big points in their race, with Tingley placing first in 30.23, while Firnhaber was second and Rossini fourth.

In the 50 breaststroke, Simpson led his age group finishing second in 39.43. Eber was third and Pek fourth. Sweeping the girls' race with a 1-2-3 finish were Liu, Susie Butler, and Michelle Brouwer.

Keeping the hot streak alive, the 200 medley relay of Sobczak, Eber, Butler and Logan easily swam to a first-place finish of 1:54.75. The girls' quartet of folFirnhaber, Butler, Rossini and Tingley also was first in 2:06.34.

With the high school swimmers in the 15- through 17-year-old age group, the girls' 200 medley relay of Casey Edwards, Rachel Brouwer, Emily Diepenhorst and Alexis Sobczak, swam away with first place with a time of 2:07.14. In the boys' 50 freestyle, Jacob Wiltse swam to second place in 26.21. In the girls' event, Edwards was first in 25.89, while Sobczak was second and Kiersten Lorenson third.

Wiltse was second in the 50 breaststroke in 33.04. In the girls' race, Brouwer finished first in 35.96, while Diepenhorst was second. To finish up the meet, the girls' relay finished first with a time of 1:54.63. The squad was made up of Diepenhorst, Brouwer, Sobczak, and Edwards.

In the diving competition, the Piranhas met their match against the Stingrays from Saline, but not without outstanding performances in all age groups.

Making her diving debut with DCAC on her fifth birthday was Lauren Witte who grabbed fourth place with 26 points.

The stars of the weekend were the 9- through 10-year-old girls, who pulled off a 1-2-3 finish. Kaylee Witte led Dexter finishing first with 84.7 points, followed by Emma Powers with 80 points and Amanda Keenan with 73.5 points.

Derek Melinsky finished in second place in the boys' 11- through 12-year-old group, with 94.6 points. Sabrina Lomax, by only a point and a half difference, finished second in the girls' 11- through 12-year-old division with 100.45 points.

Logan Thorns placed first in the 13- through 14-year-old boys' division with 145.2 points. In the girls' bracket, Sarah Keen finished second with 105.5 points.

The Dexter swimmers and divers will end the summer dual meet season Friday and Saturday with an away meet against the Ann Arbor Racquet Club.

On July 21 through 24, the Piranhas will compete in the Washtenaw Interclub Swim Conference Championships.
