Piranhas open season in pool

The Dexter Community Aquatics Club Piranhas swimming and diving team began its summer season with a dual meet at Ann Arbor Country Club June 21.

The Piranhas lost 459.50-238.50.

In the first race of the season, the boys' 8-years-old and younger 100 medley relay foursome of Brennan Hochrein, William Bergdolt, Thomas Stanton, and Joseph Jessop snagged third place with a time of 2:04.40.

In the girls' 8-year-old and younger 100 medley relay race, the DCAC squad of Annette Schultz, Heather Brouwer, Amelia Kinnard and Vedhika Raghunathan, posted a second-place time of 1:30.85.

Next up was the boys' 9- through 10-year-old 100 medley relay. Finishing second in 1:14.34, was the Piranha team of Ryan Stanton, Jonathan King Matthew Bergdolt and Ethan Reynolds.

Following directly after was the girls' 100 medley relay team of Gretchen Schultz, Amanda Keenan, Ashley Sobzak, and Brooke Primeau. The group's time of 1:19.43 was good enough to earn second place.

The first winning relay team of the season was the boys' 11- through 12-year-old 200 medley relay. The winning time of 2:19.71 was set by the combination of Zach Martell, David Alday, Andrew Pek, and Matthew Caister.

In the girls' 11- through 12-year-old 200 medley relay, the team of Jenna Luoma, Kylie Boyd, Laura Stanton, and Katie Stilber placed third in 2:29.09.

Next up was the boys' 13- through 14-year-old 200 medley relay. After a close race, the foursome of Stephen Sobczak, Charlie Butler, John Eber and Joey Pek swam away with the silver medal in 2:10.43.

Following that race was the girls' 200 medley relay. Ella Firnhaber, Chante Liu, Brianna Tingley, and Molly Keenan finished third in 2:20.04.

Casey Edwards, Rachel Brouwer, Alexis Sobzak, and Emily Diepenhorst earned second place in the girls' 15- through 17-year-old 200 medley relay with a time of 2:04.82.

Beginning the individual events with a splash was the 8 and under 25 freestyle. Leading the way for DCAC was William Bergdolt who placed fourth with a time of 28.43. Brennan Hochrein grabbed fifth, while Joseph Jessop earned sixth place. Not to be out done by the boys, the girls' 8 and under team posted some quick times of their own. Carley Romine led the way for the girls with a third-place finish of 20.58. Right behind her was Annalise Luoma, with fifth, and Popi Vorias in sixth.

Ryan Stanton won first-place honors in the boys' 9-10 year old, 50 freestyle with a time of 31.63. Following him with a third-place finish was Matthew Bergdolt. With a sixth-place finish and earning some extra points for the team was Jonathan King.

With a tough act to follow, the girls' 9-10 team put forth their best efforts and posted some very fast times. Touching the wall in third was Amanda Keenan in 37.72, while Gretchen Schultz placed fourth and Catie Prehoda sixth.

Stopping the clock at 29.14 and earning a second-place finish for the 11-12 boys in the 50 freestyle was David Alday. Andrew Pek and Mohan Kothari swam and earned fourth and fifth places, respectively. In the 11-12 girls' 50 freestyle, Jenna Luoma was the top swimmer for DCAC, placing second with a time of 31.75. Next came Katie Stilber, who snagged fifth place, while sixth went to Audrey Sleder.

Stephen Sobczak earned first place in the boys' 13-14 50 freestyle, with a time of 24.31. John Eber conquered fifth place, while Daniel Brooks battled it out for sixth.

The girls' 13-14 50 freestyle was a toss up with Molly Keenan taking third place in 29.69. Brianna Tingley and Lindsey Ebling took fifth and sixth respectively.

Jacob Wiltse was the lone swimmer for DCAC in the boys' 15-17 50 freestyle placing third in 26.55.

Second place is what the girls' 15-17 swimmer Edwards had to settle for in the 50 freestyle. Alexis Sobczak came next for her team with fifth place, while Rachel Brouwer was sixth for DCAC.

Thomas Stanton led the way for his fellow 8 and under backstrokers finishing third in 24.86. Joseph Jessop grabbed fourth place, while Clayton Kinnard was sixth. Not to be out done by the boys, Annette Schultz touched the wall first in the girls' 8 and under 25 backstroke in a time of 20.11. Taking second place was Amelia Kinnard and tying for fourth place was Carley Romine.

Ryan Stanton was the top finisher again in the boys' 9 -10 50 backstroke. His time of 34.58 was closely followed by Ethan Reynolds who claimed third and Matthew Bergdolt who captured sixth.

In the girls' race of the same division, Ashley Sobczak claimed second place for DCAC with a time of 37.84. The next finishers where Ally Hauke and Morgan Fuson who walked away with fifth and sixth places, respectively.

The boys' 11-12 50 backstroke was a tight one with Matthew Caister placing second in 33.81. Finishing next for DCAC was Zach Martell in fourth and Matt Ringlein in sixth.

Laura Stanton was fourth in 36.44. Other top finishers in the girls' 11-12 50 backstroke included Kylie Boyd, who finished fifth and Tya Chuanromanee who took home sixth place.

In the boys' 13-14 50 backstroke, Stephen Sobzcak placed first in 28.79. Next came in Daniel Brooks who captured fifth and John Eber who ended up snagging sixth place.

The girls' 13-14 50 backstroke was a tough one with Michelle Brouwer finishing fifth with a time of 35.43. Susie Butler and Ella Firnhaber took home fifth and sixth places, respectively.

Once again, Jacob Wiltse was the lone DCAC swimmer for the 15-17 boys. His backstroke time of 31.55, earned second place. Casey Edwards posted up a time of 30.08 and a second-place finish in the girls' 15-17 50 backstroke. Other top finishers for DCAC were Emily Diepenhorst in fifth and Alexis Sobczak in sixth.

To finish up the day, the boys' 8 and under 100 freestyle relay of Thomas Stanton, William Bergdolt Brennan Hochrein and Clayton Kinnard, placed third in 1:59.87. In the girls' division, Amelia Kinnard, Annelise Luoma, Vedhika Raghunathan and Annette Schultz placed second in 1:20.81.

The boys' 9-10 200 freestyle relay of Ethan Reynolds, Jonathan King, Chris Seidleck and Adam Keefer, claimed third place in 3:06.10. In the girls' group, the squad of Brooke Primeaum Ally Hauke, Amanda Keenan, and Ashley Sobczak placed second with a time of 2:38.15.

Matthew Caister, Zach Martell, Andrew Pek and David Alday, again took the top honors in the boys' 11-12 200 freestyle relay, finishing in a time of 2:09.29. Beating the boys of the same age group, the foursome of Laura Stanton, Kylie Boyd, Katie Stibler and Jenna Luoma earned second place and touched the wall at the time of 2:08.28.

In the 13-14 division, the boys' 200 freestyle relay team of Joey Pek, Charlie Butler, Daniel Brooks and Andrew Paulissen placed second in 2:03.48. Brianna Tingley, Caroline Rossini, Ella Firnhaber and Molly Keenan posted a third-place time of 2:04.56.

To finish up the meet, the 15-17 foursome of Emma Keen, Cora McHugh, Radhika Raghunathan and Diepenhorst placed third in the 200 freestyle in 2:05.06.

The Piranha divers made a strong showing but met their match with the diving Dolphins from AACC on Friday night.

Turning in their debut DCAC diving performances in the girls' 9-10 event was Emma Powers in second place with 86.70 points and Amanda Keenan in fourth place with 83.925 points.

Derek Melinsky placed first in the 11-12 boys' diving event with 99.00 points. In third place with 92.85 points in the girls' 11-12 event was Sabrina Lomax. Continuing their dual meet dive success for the Piranhas was Logan Thorns who finished first in the boys' 13-14 age group with 153.75 points and Sarah Keen who finished fourth with 119.625 in the girls' 13-14 age group.
