Dolphins dunk Huron

PUBLISHED: July 10, 2008

In an impressive turn of events, the Ann Arbor Country Club swimming and diving team beat long-standing rival Huron Valley Swim Club for the first time in 10 years in its annual dual meet of the Washtenaw Interclub Swimming Conference held at Huron Valley last month. The Dolphins prevailed 510.50-428.50.

HVSC has been the dominant team throughout WISC in dual meet competition for over a decade and the league champion overall for the past 32 years.

"This is the meet the kids gear up for each season," said AACC coach John Burch. "We have a healthy rivalry with the team and to finally win is very exciting. This was a big win for us."

To begin the meet, divers from both squads took the boards on June 27 in the blistering sun for a meet that lasted just under four hours. A deck full of spectators observed some beautiful diving that kicked off this annual rivalry between friends and classmates.

From AACC in the 8-years-old and younger boys' group, Will Blodgett and Josh Mason took second and third respectively, and for the girls' team Madeline Kaufman took home third place. Ben Daugherty won the 9- through 10-years-old boys' division with a score of 76.4 points, while Alex Nevin took third. For the 9- through 10-year-old girls, Reagan Maisch narrowly missed the top spot while placing second, with Anna Mason fourth.

Olivia Chippewa put up an impressive win for the 11- through 12-year-old girls' team with a score of 126.85 points, while Sarah Daugherty placed third. Cameron Sawyer finished second for the 13- through 14-year-old boys' division team, while Morgan Eisle and Courtney Young dueled it out placing first and second, respectively, with scores of 175.60 points and 174.95 points boosting the Dolphins in the 13- through 14-year-old girls' division.

Scott Crompton led the AACC boys in the 15- through 17-year-old age group taking second, while Austin Daugherty placed fourth. Morgan Quist finished the night earning third place in the 15- through 17-year-old girls' division.

The AACC Dolphins went home June 27 trailing HVSC by just 20 points, the smallest diving margin in many years. This set the stage for the swim meet that took place the next day.

"Saturday morning turned out to be a typical Michigan summer day with thunderstorms in the forecast," said Burch. "A little rain wasn't going to slow down the Dolphins - they were coming to swim rain or shine."

Huron Valley's 20-point lead from the June 27 diving event was eliminated quickly as the AACC 8 and under and 9-10 girls' and boys' teams dominated the medley relays with first-place finishes in all four races. The Dolphins continued the charge winning the 11-12 and 13-14 girls' medley relays and placing second in the 11-12 boys', 13-14 boys' and 15-17 boys' and girls' medley relays.

Next came the freestyle sprints. For the 8 and under boys, Nick Parros touched the wall at 18.98 for first place, while Robert Royce earned third place in 18.94 and Casey Dolen fourth in 18.98. The 8 and under girls sprinted to a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 25 freestyle. Swimming well for the Dolphins were Carolyn Bischoff with a time of 16.56, while Melanie Dunnuck touched in 18.07, Samantha Labadie in 18.44 and Jordan Maisch in 18.66 for a very impressive showing.

Robbie Zofchak won the 9-10 boys' 50 freestyle in 30.25, while Jimmy Morgan was third, Andy Dolen fourth, David Merz fifth and Brenden Chalou sixth. Allison Franz and Sarah Lynch went 1-2 in the 9-10 girls 50 freestyle, with a time of 30.63 and 32.81, respectively.

Jonathan Zofchak took the win for the 11-12 boys with a 26.85, while Max Merriman was third in 29.88. Colleen Stabler out swam the competition with a 28.88 for the win in the 11-12 girls' 50 freestyle, while Emalie Taylor in 29.34 and Abigail Mesaros in 31.28 finished second and fourth, respectively for AACC. Mark Brown and Paige Drazga sprinted to first-place finishes in the 13-14 age group with a 24.01 and 26.86 respectively. Lauren Daugherty outpaced the field for the 15-17 girls with a time of 26.62.

After a brief lightning delay, the breaststroke events were next and the Dolphins continued to swim well. In the 8 and under age group, Dominick VanEss in 23.16 and Sarah Zofchak in 25.13 both placed second. Joey Costello was mis-seeded in the 9-10 boys' race and swam in convincing fashion in the second heat to win the event overall with a time of 38.68.

The 9-10 girls followed going 1-2-3 led by Kate Mesaros with a 41.68 and Elizabeth Merriman in 42.53 and Reagan Maisch in 43.91. Evan Faletti took first in the 11-12 boys' division with a time of 35.79, while Olivia Chippewa in 36.47 and Rachel Vesey in 37.61 went 1-2 for the 11-12 girls.

Kyle Franz and Murphy Hanson led the 13-14 age group with times of 33.90 and 35.45 respectively, while Taylor Verna and Austin Daugherty went first and third for the 15-17 boys in 31.00 and 33.20, respectively. Jenna Faletti in 33.36 and Paige Garwood in 33.58 capped off the breaststroke events finishing 2-3 for the 15-17 girls.

The Dolphins wrapped up the day dominating the freestyle relays, winning seven out of a possible 10 races. With first-place finishes in the 8 and under girls, 9-10 boys and girls, 11-12 boys and girls, and 13-14 boys and girls, AACC was able to show its depth as a team. The 8 and under boys, and 15-17 boys and girls finished second to end the meet.

AACC will meet Huron Valley again at the end of July to compete for the overall championship in the Washtenaw Interclub Swimming Conference.
