Dreadnaughts wrap up year

By Don Richter, Sports Editor

PUBLISHED: June 26, 2008

For the third straight season, Dexter's girls' soccer team fell in the Division 2 state semifinals.

On June 11, the Dreadnaughts lost 1-0 to Bloomfield Hills Lahser in the state semifinals at Bloomfield Hills Andover. The Knights went on to lose to Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central 1-0 in a shootout in the state championship game.

Against Lahser, Dexter allowed the game-winning goal seven minutes into the first half.

"Our defense made a mistake that Lahser took advantage of," said Dexter coach Scott Forrester.

In the second half, the Dreadnaughts added another forward to their attack upping the pressure on the Knights' defense. Despite a fevered attempt, Dexter was unable to break the Lahser defensive stranglehold.

"We wanted more for this senior class, since this was their third straight loss in the state semifinals," Forrester said. "At this level, one mistake will determine the game. I should have done a better job preparing my players for this."

Forrester said though it was an agonizing loss, he was proud of his team.

"The adversity we faced with all of the injuries that occurred, the players never used it as an excuse, but instead stepped up and did whatever they could to help the team succeed," he said. "I would like to thank and wish our seniors the best in their future endeavors."

Dexter finished the season with an overall record of 16-3-2.

The Dreadnaughts won their eighth straight Southeastern Conference title and third consecutive regional crown this past season.

Individually for Dexter, seniors Katie Marsh and Caitlin Henderson were selected first team Division 2 All-State. Marsh will play at Eastern Michigan University next year, while Henderson will suit up for Western Michigan.

Making the All-Regional team for the Dreadnaughts were senior Shantal Daratony, junior Brittany Walls, freshman Zaryn Jennings, Katie Marsh and Henderson.

Named to the All-District squad for Dexter were senior Amanda Marsh, senior Celia Kuzon, Katie Marsh, Henderson, Daratony, Walls and Jennings.

Earning All-District honorable mention for the Dreadnaughts were senior Remme Cortright, senior Erica LeBlanc, sophomore Taylor Conter and sophomore Caitlyn Rize.

Selected first-team All-SEC for Dexter were Katie Marsh, Amanda Marsh, Daratony, Henderson and Kuzon. Receiving All-SEC honorable mention accolades were Walls, Conter, Rize and Jennings.

Seniors on this year's Dreadnaught squad were Jessica Pressley, Megan Dinser, Magaly Cantu, Colleen Cottrell, Amanda Marsh, Katie Marsh, Henderson, Daratony, LeBlanc, Kuzon and Cortright.

Named Dexter's MVP this season was Katie Marsh.

Earning the Coaches Award was Kuzon.

Conter received the Most Improved Award.

Cortright earned the Defensive Player Award.

Katie Marsh received the Offensive Player Award.

Amanda Marsh received the Alex Forrester Passionate Player Award.

Named captains for the 2009 season were junior Chelsea Low, Rize and Walls.
