Dexter doles out postseason awards

Dexter track and field concluded its season with its postseason awards banquet earlier this month.

Named the boys' Most Valuable Athlete were seniors Nick Butler and Bobby Aprill. Aprill, who'll run at the University of Michigan next year, placed first in the 1,600-meter run, in 4:12.98, and first in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:16.41, at the Division 2 state meet May 31 in Zeeland.
Receiving the girls' Most Valuable Athlete were senior Becca Pilkerton and junior Kristen Yarows. Pilkerton, who'll compete at the University of Minnesota next season, finished first in the pole vault with a mark of 11-3 at the Division 2 state meet in Zeeland. In addition to her state title, Pilkerton set a state record with a mark of 12-7 earlier this season.
Earning the boys' Most Improved Athlete Award were Ben Carruthers and Alex Kantola.
Receiving the girls' Most Improved Award were Stephanie Lim and Caci Dishman.
Presented the Coaches Award for the boys' team were Michael Schultz, Adam Cares and Ben Steavenson. Schultz set a senior class record in the shot put with a heave of 46-11. He broke Ken Sand's 41-year-old record of 46-5 set in 1967.
Earning the Up and Coming Award for the Dreadnaughts were freshmen Jeremy Horner and Nyki Caldwell. Horner set the freshman class record in the pole vault clearing 14-0. Caldwell finished fifth in the state in the high jump with a school record mark of 5-3.
Receiving the All for 'Naughts Team Spirit Award were Sheree Christian and Alex Hess.
Taking home the Southeastern Conference Sportsmanship Award for Dexter were Ellen Riehle and Andrew Herring.
Earning All-State recognition this past season for the Dreadnaughts were senior Ben Steavenson, who placed second in the 3,200-meter run in 9:24.83, Caldwell, Pilkerton and Aprill.
Both Pilkerton and Aprill also were named to the Academic All-State team.
Setting a sophomore class record in the pole vault was Steve Ferguson with a 13-0.
After winning the state title last year, Dexter's boys' team finished fourth this season with 28 points.
Capturing the Division 2 state championship this year was Williamston with 57 points.
Rounding out the top five were East Lansing in second with 42 points, while Zeeland West was third with 32 points and St. Clair Shores South Lake was fifth with 23 points.
In the girls' Division 2 state meet, the Dreadnaughts placed 10th with 13.50 points.
Winning the state title was Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern with 54 points.
Rounding out the top five were Ypsilanti in second with 40 points, while Detroit Renaissance was third with 35 points, East Lansing fourth with 34 points and Chelsea and Holland Christian tied for fifth with 26 points each.
Named Dexter captains for next year were Brandt Bowling, Dillon Kipke, Ken Metz and Ferguson for the boys' team, while Emily Hattie, Abby Hess and Yarows were selected for the girls' squad.
