"Though we had a bit of a lull midway through the half, we played a good game," said Dexter coach Scott Forrester. "Ladywood is a quality side and I think we defended well and created some goals of highlight film quality."
The host Dreadnaughts (14-2-2), ranked No. 7 in the state in Division 2, opened the scoring as senior Shantal Daratony rocketed a shot past the Blazer keeper five minutes into the game giving Dexter a 1-0 lead. Picking up an assist on the goal for the Dreadnaughts was senior Katie Marsh.
With 18 minutes remaining in the first half, senior Erica LeBlanc scored for Dexter upping its advantage to 2-0. Marsh recorded an assist on the play for the Dreadnaughts.
Five minutes later, Marsh scored increasing Dexter's lead to 3-0. LeBlanc assisted for the Dreadnaughts.
Early in the second half, Ladywood cut Dexter's lead to 3-1 with a goal.
The Dreadnaughts answered quickly thereafter as Marsh scored her second goal of the game for a 4-1 Dexter advantage.
Less than 10 seconds later, the Blazers scored for the night's final margin.
"Katie Marsh had a phenomenal game," Forrester said. "She had a part in all of our goals today."
On May 29, the host Dreadnaughts defeated Dearborn Heights Crestwood 4-0 in a Division 2 state district semifinal.
"We played some of the best soccer this season in the first 20 minutes of the game," Forrester said. "Then we seemed to coast the rest of the game."
To begin the contest, Dexter junior Haley Brewster scored off an assist from Marsh for a 1-0 Dreadnaught lead.
Three minutes later, senior Celia Kuzon scored increasing Dexter's advantage to 2-0. Marsh assisted on the goal for the Dreads.
Daratony made it 3-0 Dexter with a goal midway through the first half. Sophomore Taylor Conter recorded an assist on the score for the Dreadnaughts.
With 10 minutes remaining in the game, LeBlanc scored for the day's final tally.
Keepers sophomore Rachelle Alcini and freshman Zaryn Jennings combined for the shutout in net for Dexter.
The shutout is the Dreadnaughts' 13th of the season.
Dexter faced Warren Regina in a regional semifinal game at Berkley High School after press deadline.
If successful against the Saddlelites, the Dreadnaughts would play the winner of Trenton-Farmington in the regional final Friday 7 p.m. at Berkley.
The Division 2 state semifinals are Wednesday at Bloomfield Hills Andover. Dexter has reached the state semifinals the past two seasons before bowing out of the tournament.
The Division 2 state championship game is June 14 at East Kentwood.
