To the Editor: An ordinary day can change into tragedy in the time span of a heartbeat. Last Monday's fire in Chelsea is a high profile example. All of us with the Chelsea Area Fire Authority are thankful that no one was killed or injured in the shopping center fire. Our heartfelt compassion goes to the business owners who have suffered losses.

One thing for sure, the losses could have been much worse were it not for the immediate and professional response of our firefighters. The call came in at 12:44 p.m. and our firefighters were on the scene at 12:46. Our firefighters, full timers and paid-on-call members, are highly trained and highly dedicated. The Chelsea Area Fire Authority places a high value on training, preparedness and readiness to serve our community.
Last year our firefighters responded to 1,218 calls for service. These calls range from medical emergencies to car crashes, fires, and all types of rescues. Last week our firefighters responded to a water rescue on a nearby lake. In every case, from the shopping center fire on Monday to the water rescue later in the week, our firefighters stand ready to serve all the residents of Chelsea, Lyndon, Lima, Sylvan and parts of Dexter Township.
To all of our firefighters and Chief Jim Payeur we want to thank you for a job well done. It is an honor to serve with you.

Chair, Chelsea Area Fire Authority
To the Editor: The Dexter Board of Education and the staff, teachers and students at Dexter Community Schools thank you for supporting the recent bond initiative.
I'm am very proud to be a resident of Dexter and to be the President of the Board of Education. It shouldn't, but it amazes me every time I work with the Dexter community to solve our educational issues.
You are all so busy, yet you unselfishly give of your time to define the needs, research the data to understand the options, and then wisely recommend the best solutions for our kids.
Your generosity will pay great dividends not only for the educational success of our students, but also for our community. It was so gratifying to see the Chamber and service organizations, as well as the booster clubs, get so solidly behind the bond.
I think we all realize that strong schools translate directly to a strong community, one that clearly provides a convincing choice for new families.
As someone who specifically moved to the Dexter community in 1995 because of the schools, I've had my decision validated time and again by the amazing support Dexter has provided to keep our schools the best in Michigan.
Thanks again, and I look forward to working with you all as we strive to meet our mission, "To Provide a Quality Education for All Students."
Larry Cobler, President, Dexter Board of Education
