Dexter Relay chasing its goals

PUBLISHED: May 8, 2008

The Relay for Life of Dexter is up to 33 teams and are still working toward its goal of 36 teams for second annual event June 21-22.

Teams have raised more than $20,000 already and there are 348 people registered. The deadline to register so people can get their Relay shirt is May 19. Any team is open to new people, but they are welcome to join the committee team if they aren't familiar with any of the other teams.

The event has confirmed an entertainment schedule for the 24-hour program. Chuck Colby from Three Men and A Tenor is going to DJ from 5 until 8 p.m. Local band Untitled will play at 4 p.m. The Survivor Lap is at 10 a.m. with the Survivor Brunch starting at 10:45 a.m.

"We'd love for as many survivors as possible to register on-line so we know to expect them," said Juli Huddleston, event chair-Relay for Life of Dexter. "Part of the Relay's biggest goal is to encourage Survivors in their fight or in their celebration of being cancer-free."

A new Fight Back Ceremony at 1:30 p.m. and the Dexter Fire Fighters are coming out to help light the Luminaries at 9 p.m.

There are plenty of kid-friendly events scheduled from 1 until 5 p.m. on Saturday. The Key Club will do face painting, the Dexter Firefighters are bringing out a vehicle for the kids to look at and The Bounce Zone is providing a big bouncer from noon until 8 p.m. Also, Dancer's Edge, Dexter Martial Arts and Champion Gymnastics will be doing demos and the Dexter Cheerleaders will be out to teach the kids some cheers.

"Our big goal this year is to make the Relay a huge community event where people can come and spend the day, have fun and be together with friends and family and helping to eliminate cancer," Huddleston said.
