"My feeling is I live here in the area, so I thought it would be nice to put something back into the community," Zahn said.
"I've been with Dexter for a couple of years and it's a very progressive department," he added.
"They're very community-oriented, they have good leadership and the firefighters are really dedicated and they do an excellent job."
The promotion came last month and since then Zahn says he has been keeping busy with operational details, including writing polices, updating the standard procedures manual and reviewing job descriptions.
He is also a director of ground operations when he is ranking firefighter on a scene. "I assist and overview just about everything that's going on there," Zahn said. "It allows Bob to work with the apparatus and maintenance."
Zahn has been with the Dexter Area FD for two years and lives in Webster Township. His residence is a big reason why he retired from the Scio Township fire department last August. "It took too long to get into the station from my home," Zahn said.
He had retired after 30 years with the Ann Arbor City Fire Department.
The third-generation firefighter was a charter member of Scio Township's fire department and a former Scio resident, living there with wife Barbara from 1977 to 2000.
He is a highly decorated firefighter, having won the Life Saving Award from Ann Arbor in the late 1970s and a Life Saving Award many years later from the Washtenaw County Mutual Aid Association. His most recent accolade was being named Firefighter of the Year by the firefighters' association in 2006.
