Gieske is village's first female sergeant

By Sandi Kasha, The Dexter Leader

PUBLISHED: May 3, 2007

Besides being Dexter Village's new sergeant, Beth Gieske also gets the honor of being the village's first female sergeant.

Gieske started work on April 10 to replace Brian Filipiak, who was promoted to Scio Township lieutenant.

Leaving behind her sergeant post in Ypsilanti Township, Gieske said she looks forward to working in the Dexter community.

"When I was in Ypsilanti, I did more behind-the-scenes-type of work," she said. "At the Dexter station, it seems I'm more involved with the community and I like it so much better. So the new job gives me the opportunity to be out and about around town."

Gieske, who is a Chelsea High School graduate, said she has enjoyed a 13-year career in law enforcement.

"She is a straight shooter and a good person, I know she'll do a great job," said Cmdr. Dave Egeler, who has known Gieske since she started work as a police officer.

She attended the Washtenaw Community College Police Academy after receiving a degree in criminal justice from Eastern Michigan University.

Gieske knew that she wanted a career in law enforcement. She said her father was a firefighter and her uncles and cousins were police officers.

She said she enjoyed hearing their stories and learning about police work so much that she followed in their footsteps.

"It seemed to me that they were out and about and making a difference in the community," she said. "I enjoy the police dynamics anyway. I love the contact you have with the public."

Gieske is still getting to know the area and said that the workload is quite different from her previous job experience.

But she looks at her new job in a positive light.

"I look forward to working in Dexter," she said. "You're responsible for the community and the road patrol. It's a different arena from Ypsilanti."
