The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a unique fund-raising event in which teams of participants take turns walking the track overnight in an effort to fight cancer. Teams camp out, eat and play games. This year's Relay For Life will take place on the track and field at WSEC or old Chelsea High School on May 17 and 18.
The message of the event is that no one fights alone.
At 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, all cancer survivors, meaning anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer, will join together on the track and walk or wheelchair the first lap, unified in victory and hope. This emotional lap honors the courage of all who have defeated cancer.
The atmosphere of Relay For Life is one of camaraderie and celebration, providing an opportunity for cancer survivors to pass the torch of hope on to those still battling cancer or those that might be touched by cancer in the future. Because no one fights cancer alone, friends, family members, and caregivers are encouraged to attend the Survivors Lap and join their loved ones as they walk around the track.
If you are a cancer survivor and would like to take part in the Relay For Life of Chelsea, call your American Cancer Society at 1-734-971-4300 or 1-800-ACS-2345. All survivors and their caregivers are invited to attend the survivor luncheon immediately following the survivor lap and opening ceremonies. Please pre-register by contacting this year's event Chair, Janice Kett-Blinn, at jackblinn@chartermi.net or by phone in the evening at 1-734-475-7543.
The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by saving lives, diminishing suffering and preventing cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. Founded in 1913 and with national headquarters in Atlanta, the Society has 13 regional Divisions and local offices in 3,400 communities, involving millions of volunteers across the U.S.
