Finn leads Brewers over Cubs in opener

Ben Finn pitched three scoreless innings and went 2-for-2 with his bat to lead the Swisher Commercial Brewers over the KeyBank Cubs, 3-2, last Saturday afternoon in Dexter Little League Major division action at Mill Creek Middle School.

Finn was the first of four Brewer pitchers, preceding Andy McWilliams, Colin Hanss and Brett Garwood. The foursome combined for 12 strikeouts as the squad won for the second time in as many games.
Eric Wenzel's two hits, Zach Wenzel's eventual winning run and Jacob Copland's unassisted double play also contributed to the victory.
The Cubs are now 1-1.

The Nationals' bats came alive in a thrilling victory. As a result of aggressive base running and timely hitting, the Nationals scored four two-out runs during the contest.
Brennan Maisch, Greg Katcher and Dylan St. Charles all had clutch RBI singles for the winners.
Defensively, the Nationals were nearly flawless, committing only one error. Nate Mellifont continued his solid play with web gems in both the infield and outfield, while Maisch was solid behind the plate. St. Charles, Dean Haas, Joe Malloy, Jonah Hancock, and Devin Wilson turned in strong efforts as well.
The Nationals' pitching trio of Katcher, Maisch and Brennan Conter was relentless. Katcher finished with three strikeouts, while Conter fanned five in two scoreless frames.
MacKay Little had two doubles and two RBI for the Braves, who slipped to 0-2.

AmeriNet Padres, 0
Pitchers Daniel Savakus, Jacob Ladziak and Jordan Sharp combined for a two-hit shutout, leading the Mets to their second straight victory.
Savakus, who started the game, retired nine of the 10 batters he faced. He struck out five, walked none and left with a 3-0 lead. Ladziak hurled two innings, fanning two, while Sharp picked up the save.
Defensively, catcher Derek Seidl contributed a momentum-killing play in the fifth inning when he made a diving tag on Padres' speedster Scott DeWaele as he slid into home plate following a passed ball.
Sharp recorded two doubles and two RBI to lead the Mets' offense. Ladziak also doubled, and Seidl, Cameron Winston, Alex Hallway and Brian Lim added key singles.
The Padres (0-2) received singles from Ryan Kimball and DeWaele, while lead-off hitter Bobby Toth reached base twice. Kimball, Toth and Gregory Goffee handled the pitching duties, combining for seven strikeouts.

Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Pirates (1-1) rallied when Joey Barlett doubled in the tying run and later scored on a soft fly ball behind second base. Barlett finished with two doubles and two runs, while teammate Ben Bruetsch had two safeties and scored twice.
Winning pitcher Patrick Gronvall went the last three innings, allowing only one run. He added three strikeouts and did not walk a batter. The Pirates also received a key defensive play from leftfielder Nick Baker, who robbed Padre Bobby Toth of an extra-base hit.
Gregory Goffee led the Padres with a three-run triple and a double. Scott DeWaele collected two singles. Defensively, Liam Fitzgerald was impressive with two putouts in the fifth inning.

The Mets jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and then held on against the pesky Pirates.
Pitcher Derek Seidl closed the deal for the winners, working the final 3 2/3 innings in relief of starter Jordan Sharp. He surrendered two runs and two hits, while striking out six and walking just one.
Sharp recorded two doubles, two RBI and two runs to lead the Mets' offense. Teammates Cameron Winston, Brian Lim and Jacob Ladziak (three RBI) also smacked doubles, while Seidl and Gordon Makin added key singles.
Pacing the Pirates, who scored three runs in the third inning and two in the fifth, were Ben Bruetsch's double and triple. Joey Barlett and Jake Stegemann added safeties as well. Pitching-wise, Patrick Gronvall gave up just two runs and three hits in three innings.

A four-run fourth inning broke open a close game and propelled the Brewers to a season-opening victory.
Ben Finn, Andy McWilliams and Brett Garwood recorded five of the Brewers' six hits and six of their eight runs. They also combined to pitch a three-hitter, striking out 10.
Opposing pitchers Greg Katcher, Brennan Maisch and Brennan Conter were effective as well, totaling 12 strikeouts and allowing only four earned runs. All three were credited with outstanding velocity and location.
Defensively, Nate Mellifont, Dylan St. Charles and Maisch turned in strong efforts for the Nationals.
