Merridene Overdorf

Chelsea

Merridene Overdorf suffered an unexpected brain hemorrhage and died April 8 while traveling in Greece. She was 63.

Preceded in death by her father, Dean Cronkhite, and her sister, Bonnie Overpeck, Mrs. Overdorf leaves behind her husband, Rand Overdorf, her son, Jason Overdorf, her daughter, Susan Siena, and her granddaughters, Charlotte and Elisabeth Siena. She is also survived by her mother, Susan Cronkhite, and two sisters, Suanne Milligan and Jo Browder, as well as many other beloved friends and relatives.

Mrs. Overdorf was born in Parke County, Ind., in 1943, the daughter of Dean and Susan Cronkhite. She grew up in Waveland, Ind., and attended Waveland High School. Later, she attended Indiana State University, where she earned a bachelor's and master's degree in education, and met her future husband of 42 years. She married Rand Overdorf in 1964, and in 1965 they moved to Michigan, where she lived for many years in Chelsea and then Ann Arbor.

An elementary school teacher prior to her retirement in 1998, Mrs. Overdorf taught in the Stockbridge school system for nearly 20 years. Originally certified in elementary education, she taught first and second grades, then earned a second master's degree from Eastern Michigan University so that she could teach special education. Respected by her colleagues and loved by her students, she was all those things that the best teachers are permitted to be — friend, advisor and stand-in mother. To her work, as well as to her personal life, she brought a relentless, overflowing enthusiasm, a profound sense of empathy, an unerring moral compass and often unrecognized reserves of strength. Through her generosity of spirit, direct acts of kindness, and, most of all, by the example she set, she made all of us who knew and loved her better, and, without her, we are all of us diminished.

Since her retirement, Mrs. Overdorf had turned her energies to various causes, hobbies and pursuits. She was a volunteer with Ronald McDonald House and Ten Thousand Villages in Ann Arbor and an active member of International Neighbors and the American Association of University Women. A passionate Wolverines fan, she was a longtime season ticket holder for University of Michigan football and basketball and rarely missed a game. She was an avid golfer and a member of many social committees at Travis Pointe Country Club. Though she was unduly humble about it, she was an unusually keen and committed reader. She loved cooking and dining out. She brought a missionary zeal to her regimen of diet and exercise.

And she never lost her love of travel, learning and discovery. Over the past 20 years, she and Rand made over two dozen trips to Mexico, spending extended stays in Huatulco, where Merridene had begun to study Spanish. More recently, Rand and Merridene had enjoyed a resurgence of their 40-year romance on trips to France, India, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, and many other beautiful and intriguing places.

She spent her last week vacationing with Rand on the island of Crete, where in her last days, as throughout her life, her kindness and infectious enthusiasm had endeared her to the few restaurateurs, shop owners and residents who had opened early for the spring season. Part of her — her relentless optimism, we hope — lives on in Greece, where, according to her express wish, she donated her liver, her kidneys and her eyes so that others might benefit from her passage. Those who knew her will recognize by this final gesture that she died as she had lived — with clearsighted hope and a pragmatic conviction that we can always do more.

There will be a memorial service to honor Merridene's life and celebrate the passion with which she lived it on Saturday, April 28 at 11 a.m. at the Nie Funeral Home, 2400 Carpenter Road, Ann Arbor. Visitation will also be held on Friday, April 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Donations in Merridene's name can be sent to the Ann Arbor chapter of Ronald McDonald House, 1600 Washington Heights, Ann Arbor, MI 48104. Telephone: 734-994-4442; email:info@rmh-annarbor.org. Please visit Merridene's personal webpage at www.niefuneralhomes.com to leave a memory.
