This year's event will again feature a four-mile run/walk and a one-mile European cross country run for children eighth-grade and younger.
The four-mile course starts at 10 a.m. and is run along the bike path. The one-mile course starts at 9:15 a.m. and is run over grass, sand and hay barrels.
Pre-registration is $20 and entry forms can be picked up at Running Fit, Banfield's Westside Grill, Dexter Pub, Chelsea Bank, Busch's and Life is Good. Entry forms can also be found at the Joan C. Banfield Web site at www.jcbfoundation.org.
There will also be race registration at the packet pick-up Saturday at Life is Good 5 to 7 p.m. or the day of the race starting 7:30 p.m.
Registration at packet pick-up or day of race is $25.
"We love Hudson Mills and the staff there that support so many different events," said Bob Jazwinski, one of the organizers of the event. "The one-mile kids' run is a half-mile loop that they do twice. We added some hay bales along the grassy course. We initially were going to have it (course) run through sand as well, but we wanted the runners to be happy about their run once done.
"The four-mile course begins with the kids' cross country half-mile, hay bales included. Then it goes around the beautiful bike path at Hudson Mills. We love the course since it's runner/walker friendly, no traffic and more down hills than up. We have as many walkers as we do runners, so it's a great mix of competitors."
Awards will be presented to the top five male and female performers in each group, plus awards to the overall top male, female and Master's winners.
There will also be t-shirts, food and refreshments, along with giveaways.
The event has been very successful and grown to nearly 400 in the first two years.
"We think things are going very well with the race," Jazwinski said. "We have learned a ton about race management (over the years). We know that we can do some things better. We try to improve the race every year and make it something nice for everyone who shows up regardless of age or ability.
"We also try to make sure everyone goes home with a little something."
Bobble-head awards will be given out after the kids' race.
Proceeds from the event are used to help fulfill the Joan C. Banfield Foundation mission to support athletic opportunities and programs for females in kindergarten through 12th-grade in the Dexter community.
The event has helped the Joan C. Banfield Foundation make $50,000 worth of grants and scholarships to Dexter area athletics, including the expansion of middle school athletics, contributions toward the new pool scoreboards, tennis hit-back wall and a new high jump pit.
The event also helps support the organization's annual college scholarship program for graduating females from Dexter High School.
"We hope our races continue to grow," Jazwinski said. "The Banfield Foundation is trying to make things better for everyone interested in physical fitness. The Joan C. Banfield organization is a first class group of individuals who look out for the best interest of not only the female athletes, but all kids. We love working with them."
