Dexter Community Band hosts anniversary concert
PUBLISHED: April 19, 2007
The Dexter Community Band started 25 years ago at the suggestion of Chris Wall, who was director of Dexter's Community Education program in 1982. The band started with 14 rusty musicians under the baton of Dr. Dave Angus. Today the band has grown to include 85 accomplished musicians and continues to be sponsored by Dexter Community Education.

There are four original members still playing in the band: Karla Linkner, Phyllis Risdon, Pat Wier and Milford Wolpoff.
The band has won state honors as an example of a very successful community education program and has participated in adult band festivals while performing at many venues throughout Michigan. In 2001 the band traveled to Europe for a concert tour.
In the band's 25-year history there have been over 400 individuals involved with the band. Including members from 18 to 80 years old, the band membership represents all walks of life. In addition to presenting four local concerts a year, the band also provides smaller ensembles for concerts at local retirement communities and community events such as Victorian Christmas.
The Dexter Community band will present a special concert marking the end of its 25th season on Sunday April 29. The free concert will begin at 3 p.m. in the Center for Performing Arts of Dexter High School.
In celebration of the memory of David L Angus, the band has commissioned a new composition titled "Highlander Legacy" by James L. Hosay. Consisting of variations on "Comin' Thro The Rye," "Highlander Legacy" honors Angus' Scottish heritage. The debut performance will be conducted by the composer during the April 29 concert.
A true community undertaking, over 50 individuals and local business have contributed funding toward this new work of music. Audience members and interested individuals have purchases notes, measures and pages of music as well as paying for the opportunity to conduct the band.
The band includes members from many surrounding towns and is supported by Dexter Community Education. Prospective members are encouraged to consider joining the group next September as they start their new season.
