The 84-year-old donated fund to build a well to supply clean water to an impoverished village.
King wanted to "do something for those poor women who walked so far carrying water on their heads." King's generosity may prevent those women from going the distance for clean water.
The cost for one well is $7,000. With her generous gift Webster United Church of Christ was able to launch its "Living Water Well" project.
Ironically, King isn't a member of the church, but was compelled to do something for the villagers in Ghana.
The "Mattie King Living Water Well" is 125 feet deep and produces some of the purest water in the area.
The well will serve 18,000 people who would otherwise be required to take water from polluted streams or dig deep in their pockets for water controlled by the municipality., said Rev. LaVerne M. Gill.
She added that the villagers were unable to afford the cost of the municipality's water and walked three miles or more to get the polluted water, which caused, diseases which in many instances led to death, particularly among children.
