Prior to spring break, the Dreadnaughts, who last season reached the Division 2 semifinals before losing 4-0 to eventual state champion Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central, had to cancel three games because of inclement weather.
"This created an unusual season opener against neighboring rival Chelsea for (our) first game," said Dexter coach Scott Forrester, entering his fourth season.
Before the game even started, Division 2 No. 3-ranked Dexter (0-0-1) suffered a major setback when senior All-Stater and co-captain Caitlin Henderson went down with a serious ankle injury during pre-game warm-ups. Henderson will play next season at Western Michigan University.
"She'll be out for around a month," Forrester said.
Even with Henderson out, the Dreadnaughts came out strong.
"The game started like any Dexter-Chelsea game with great intensity and passion," Forrester said.
Early on, the Dreadnaughts pressured Division 2 No. 6-ranked Chelsea (1-0-1) peppering Bulldog keeper Jenna Jarvis with shot after shot.
"The midfield, led by seniors Amanda Marsh and Shantal Daratony, was totally dominated by the Dreads," Forrester said.
Despite the constant offensive pressure, Dexter was unable to break the Chelsea defensive line. At the break, the score was deadlocked at 0-0.
In the second half, the Dreadnaught pressure finally caused the Bulldogs to crack.
Three minutes into the second half, senior returning All-Stater Katie Marsh converted a pass from Megan Dinser for a goal and a 1-0 Dexter lead. Marsh, along with sister Amanda, will play next year at Eastern Michigan University.
"Katie found more opportunities on goal, but was stopped by the Bulldog keeper," Forrester said.
With 13 minutes remaining, Chelsea junior Brooke Ehman scored tying the game at 1-1.
Preserving the tie in net for Dexter was freshman keeper Zaryn Jennings.
"Our players did well to compose themselves after the pre-game injury to Hendy (Henderson)," Forrester said. "The game was typical of a game after spring break. It (game) showed a lot of the things that we needed to fine tune. Our fitness was lacking and our timing was off."
Forrester said Chelsea's keeper Jarvis played well.
"Give Jenna Jarvis a lot of credit," he said. "The eight saves that she made, many of them were point blank shots."
Forrester said the Dreadnaughts would get better as the season progressed.
"Expect better things to come with our next few games," he said.
