Dexter Chamber delivers to local Food Bank
PUBLISHED: April 17, 2008
Chamber Vice President Jill Love with Dexter Schools Superintendent Evelynn Shirk.
The Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce members showed their support for the community last Tuesday evening at a fundraiser for the Dexter Food Bank. The fundraiser was put on by the Board of Directors of the Chamber who worked hard as "Celebrity Servers" at the Big Boy restaurant on Zeeb Road.
"It was fun to see the Board of Directors (usually in business attire) all wearing the gold and maroon colored Dexter T-shirts and serving the dining guests," said Judy Feldmann of the Chamber.
The Chamber held a 50/50 raffle and silent auction as a way to raise additional funds. The silent auction contained a wide assortment of items donated by local businesses. A special thanks to all members who donated services and/or items.
Some of the people who came out to support the event included Evelyn Shirk, Paul Cousins and Mark Ouimet. Shirk who won the 50/50 raffle and immediately donated it back to the fundraiser.
Some people arrived at the restaurant not knowing that a fundraiser was being held. Once they realized that money was being raised to help those in Dexter, people became quite generous. Many left large tips as well as buying 50/50 raffle tickets and adding donations to the big jar at the register. Many people expressed that they didn't realize that there was need in Dexter for a food pantry.
"It has been brought to the attention of the Chamber that there is a great need for a food pantry to be located in Dexter," said Chamber of Commerce President Joe Nowak. "There are more families than you think who really need help."
The Chamber Board would like to thank Sam Berry, Owner of Big Boy, for his part in donating 10 percent of all sales and 100 percent of gratuities from the event.
