Dexter blanks Hartland

Dreads also travel to Fenton invite

Dexter's girls' soccer team defeated host Hartland 2-0 April 2.

The Eagles used an off-sides trap to try and slow down the attacking Dreadnaughts. The strategy worked early, before Dexter's constant pressure finally broke Hartland.

"Hartland has tremendous speed which allowed them to set the tempo for the first half," said Dexter coach Scott Forrester. "Our second half adjustments allowed our team to manipulate their defense and create better scoring opportunities which wore them down."

After a scoreless first half, Dexter's Amanda Marsh kicked in a rebound for a goal and a 1-0 Dreadnaught lead midway through the second half.

Six minutes later, the Dreadnaughts (2-1-1) scored on a free kick as Caitlin Henderson blistered a shot from 30 yards away for a goal and the game's final margin.

Earning the shutout in net for Dexter was keeper Liz Umstead.

Forrester said the Dreadnaught defense played well.

"Our back four is gaining more and more confidence," he said. "They only allowed five shots on goal, with all of them handled easily by Liz Umstead."

On March 31, Dexter participated in the Fenton Invitational.

The Dreadnaughts began the tournament defeating Birmingham Seaholm 4-0. The Maples were ranked as high as No. 4 in the state last season.

Dexter jumped on Seaholm early as Brittany Walls scored two minutes into the game off a pass from Katie Marsh.

Eleven minutes later, Katie Marsh scored two consecutive goals increasing the Dreadnaught lead to 3-0. Picking up an assist on one of the goals for Dexter was Sarah Christian.

In the second half, the Dreadnaught put the game away as Amanda Marsh scored off an assist from Walls for the contest's final tally.

"I'm glad that we finally got a game under our belts," Forrester said. "We had a nice game against a young Seaholm squad, attacking with and without the ball."

In its second game of the tournament, Dexter lost 1-0 to Flint Powers.

"A quality side like Powers will take advantage of any lapses," Forrester said. "We didn't do all of the little things that we needed to do in this game to come out with a better result."

The Chargers scored the game's lone goal on a missed clearing chance by the Dreadnaughts.

In its third contest of the tournament, Dexter tied Fenton 1-1. The host Tigers were ranked as high as No. 7 in last year's state rankings.

"Facing another top-10 Division II team this early in the season challenged our side," Forrester said. "We are playing with a new defensive scheme and expect some early season mistakes.

"With this in my, I think the investment in playing tough early season competition that will expose us, will pay big dividends as our season progresses."

After a scoreless first half, the Dreadnaughts struck early one minute into the second stanza as Katie Marsh beat the Fenton keeper off a pass from Amanda Marsh for a 1-0 lead.

Two minutes later, another missed clearing attempt by Dexter led to the Tigers' lone goal and game's final margin.

The Dreadnaughts next travel to Ypsilanti Lincoln for a game Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

On April 19, Dexter hosts Tecumseh at 5:30 p.m.

The Dreadnaughts' game against Jackson Parma County Western March 27 was rescheduled because of lightning to May 14.
