$30K raised during local CROP Walk

PUBLISHED: April 10, 2008

Despite a struggling economy, last October residents participated in the Chelsea/Dexter CROP Hunger Walk and raised more than $30,500 for the poor and hungry.

Fifteen percent of this money will go to Faith in Action to help locally, while the rest will go to the far corners of the world.

Thirteen organizations participated in the CROP Walk: Ten local churches, the Chelsea High School Interact Club, Silver Maples senior housing and the Chrelsea Retirement Community.

Each year the organization that raises the most money per walker is awarded the Golden Sneaker. This year's recipient is the Dexter United Methodist Church (DUMC), which raised $15,109 in total and averaged $540 per walker.

Kathie Gourlay, the walk coordinator, presented DUMC with their Sneaker at DUMC's 10:30 a.m. church service on Feb. 24.

Bill Wade has been the lead organizer for Dexter United Methodist for many years. He began walking in 1972 and has walked ever since.

Last year he raised nearly $8,000 by collecting donations. This made him the Walker who raised the second highest amount in Michigan. He says that many of his donors are people in the community who are already aware of the CROP Hunger Walk and give every year. If they have any kind of conscience, they jump at the chance to help, he said.

Wade added that the walk is something the community should be involved in. It's to show a kind of symbolic togetherness with those that have to walk for water and wood and medicine to survive.

With last year's awards and recognitions made, it is now time to start planning for next October's CROP Hungr Walk. There will be an organizational meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29 at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Chelsea.
