Piranhas win league crown

On March 23, the Piranhas found themselves holding onto first place by 53 points over Saline during the afternoon session of the Southeast Michigan Swim League meet and by over 800 points to the third place Brighton squad. With the 13- through 18-year-old age groups up next, Dexter Community Aquatics Club needed some breathing room heading into the meet's final stretch.

The two 200 medley relay teams entered for the 13- through 14-year-old girls did not disappoint by taking first place with the squad of Lisa Crompton, Hailey Sheats, Melissa Vesey, and Nicole Minzey in 2:07.40 and the quartet of Megan Day, Kate Fitzsimons, Molly Keenan, and Murphy Hansen claiming fourth in 2:11.14.
Minzey took first in the 200 freestyle in 2:12.17 far ahead of the closest challenger while Day placed sixth in 2:21.38, Brianna Tingley was 11th in 2:24.96 and Michelle Brouwer was 20th in 2:33.53. Hailey Sheats claimed fourth in the 200 individual medley in 2:40.84, while teammate Keenan was sixth in 2:44.11, Marne Little 12th in 2:49.13, and Susie Butler 14th in 2:55.52.
Hansen sprinted to a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 26.64, while Minzey was third in 27.61, Tingley 17th in 30.35, and Little 20th in 30.69. Vesey cruised to the top spot in the 100 butterfly in 1:07.68, while Crompton was third in 1:12.24, Tingley seventh in 1:18.48, and Kennan ninth in 1:19.21.
Hansen added to her medal haul by easily outdistancing the field in the 100 freestyle stopping the clock in 57.42, while Day finished 10th in 1:04.95, Fitzsimons 14th in 1:07.52, and Butler 22nd in 1:10.26. Crompton added another first-place finish in the 100 backstroke to the Piranha count by finishing in 1:08.96. Vesey claimed third in 1:10.11, while Brouwer garnered 12th in 1:17.42, and Butler took 15th in 1:18.83.
Sheats finished first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.84 making it the fifth consecutive event with a Piranha getting top honors. Fitzsimons took home the sixth-place ribbon finishing in 1:24.91, while Little placed 10th in 1:28.09, and Brouwer was 18th in 1:32.26.
The squad of Minzey, Hansen, Crompton, and Vesey won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:50.65, while Day, Keenan, Sheats, and Tingley placed fourth in 1:58.87. The girls finished in first place in the age group and stretched the lead to over 300 points.
The boys 13- through 14-year-old 200 medley relay team of Mark Brown, Kyle Franz, Jake Claflin, and Nate Kilian finished second in 1:58.95, while Daniel Brooks, Charlie Butler, John Eber, and Matt Munzel placed seventh in 2:19.83. Claflin held onto third spot in the 200 freestyle clocking in at 2:03.31. Munzel captured 11th in 2:20.75, while Joey Pek was 12th in 2:21.02, and Brooks 16th in 2:28.75.
Franz took first place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:19.87, while Connor Thompson placed seventh in 2:38.68. Brown claimed first in the 50 freestyle in a personal best 23.88, Kilian was fourth in 26.09, Munzel 16th in 29.17, and Pek recorded a personal best 29.71 to take 19th.
Eber led the Piranhas in the 100 butterfly, taking ninth in 1:14.96, followed by Thompson in 1:17.28 and Munzel in 1:20.82 to place 11th. Brown finished second in the 100 freestyle in 53.83, while Claflin took fifth in 57.13, Kilian sixth in 57.82, and Brooks 15th in 1:06.38. Brooks placed fifth in the 100 backstroke in 1:13.93, while Eber grabbed ninth in 1:16.20, Butler 14th in 1:20.78 and Pek 15th in 1:20.92. Franz swam to a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.14, while Thompson was 16th in 1:28.68, and Butler 19th in 1:37.69.
Claflin, Franz, Kilian, and Brown grabbed first place in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:41.40 and Thompson, Butler, Pek, and Eber added to the point total finishing eighth. The boys also won their age group and added over 250 points to the spread over Saline.
The girls' 15- through 18-year-old squad placed two teams in the top five in the 200 medley relay with Natalie Fluent, Rachel Brouwer, Casey Edwards, and Caroline Munzel taking first in 2:05.15 and Radhika Raghunathan, Paige Sheats, Cora McHugh, and Emily Wetzel fourth in 2:22.76.
McHugh secured fourth in the 200 freestyle in 2:17.03, while Wetzel checked in with a 2:18.04 to place sixth, and Raghunathan was 16th in 2:39.92. Brouwer took fourth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:36.90, while Sheats held onto sixth place in 2:40.73. Edwards grabbed the top spot in the 50 freestyle in 25.66, and Munzel was sixth in 28.41.
Edwards set a new SMSL record in the 100 butterfly and earned first place in 1:00.67, while Fluent was fourth in 1:09.47, and McHugh sixth in 1:11.33. Wetzel grabbed fifth in the 100 freestyle in 1:02.82 and Sheats 10th in 1:07.22. Fluent finished third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:10.26, while Munzel claimed sixth in 1:14.04, and Raghunathan 10th in 1:23.32.
Brouwer grabbed the second spot in the 100 breaststroke in 1:19.95. Edwards, Munzel, Fluent, and Wetzel finished in a tie for first place in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:51.07, while the girls placed first overall in their age group and added over 170 points to the now seemingly insurmountable lead.
The last to swim were the 11- through 12-year-olds, needing only to stay close to the Saline squad to ensure a sixth straight championship. They accomplished that goal and more.
The girls' 200 medley relay team of Laura Stanton, Chante Liu, Rachel Vesey, and Taylor Orr placed fourth in 2:17.02, while teammates Nicole Reisman, Alex Maser, Megan Lynch, and Katie Stilber finished 12th in 2:29.46.
Stanton added a seventh-place finish in the 200 freestyle finishing in 2:26.65, while Jenna Luoma came in eighth in 2:29.56. Orr claimed eighth in the 100 individual medley in 1:17.56 with Liu placing 14th in 1:20.22, Maser 23rd in 1:23.85, Reisman 25th in 1:25.76, and Shelby Scherdt 44th in 1:45.88. Orr grabbed seventh in the 50 freestyle in 29.89, while Allie Stilber placed 49th in 38.17.
Vesey swam to a fourth-place finish in the 50 butterfly in 32.67, while Lynch was 28th in 39.20 and Scherdt 38th in 52.93. Stanton continued her solid day by taking sixth in the 100 freestyle in 1:05.75 followed by Luoma in seventh in 1:06.36. Lynch finished 18th in 1:14.52 and Katy Kleinhenz was 36th in 1:29.80.
Luoma placed seventh in the 50 backstroke in 36.09 closely followed by Reisman in eighth in 36.50. Emily Messiter placed 19th in 40.44, while Kleinhenz was 42nd and Scherdt 43rd.
Liu swam a 39.82 in the 50 breaststroke to capture sixth, Maser was 11th in 40.94, Vesey 12th in 41.24, and Reisman 15th in 42.93. Closing out the meet was the 200 freestyle relay squad of Orr, Vesey, Stanton, and Luoma taking second place in 2:00.14 and the quartet of Liu, Maser, Lynch, and Messiter placing ninth.
The boys' group won their age group for the day and started the meet off with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay by Max Merriman, David Alday, Brennan Maisch, and Jonathan Zofchak and a ninth-place finish by Preetom Chakraborty, Tyler Orr, Logan Simpson, and Mohan Kothari. It was a sweep of the top three spots for the boys in the 200 freestyle, with Zofchak placing first in 2:09.50, Alday second in 2:13.09, and Merriman third in 2:17.45.
Zofchak took third in the 100 individual medley in 1:11.42 followed by Maisch in fourth with a time of 1:12.02 and Logan Simpson sixth in 1:14.90. Zofchak again led the Piranhas in the 50 freestyle placing second in 27.03, while teammate Maisch scored a fourth-place finish in 28.49, Chakraborty 26th in 35.19, and Kothari 32nd in 38.61.
Maisch claimed second place in the 50 butterfly in 31.06, Simpson was fifth in 32.79, and Orr 18th in 45.39. Alday led the way in the 100 freestyle finishing fourth in 1:03.06. Merriman grabbed third in the 50 backstroke with a time of 33.56, while Chakraborty was 18th and Kothari 21st. Chakraborty took 20th in the 50 breaststroke in 51.39 and Orr was next in 52.21. Alday, Orr, Merriman, and Simpson took fourth in the 200 freestyle relay in 2:05.71 to close out the scoring for the day.
When the score sheets were tallied, the DCAC Piranhas claimed their sixth consecutive SMSL championship by a margin greater than 300 points followed by Saline, Howell, Pinckney, and Hartland in the top five. The kids will get a well deserved break and then onto spring conditioning in preparation for the summer season.
