Scio public safety hearing

A hearing on the Scio Township Public Safety Committee report has been postponed to Tuesday, the date of the next township board meeting.

The previous hearing date was last week, but was postponed due to time constraints.

The report will contain findings and recommendations about township fire and police services.

The fire department has been a much-debated issue over the past year, and several residents have voiced concern over the fact that the township only contracts with the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department for one third shift deputy.

The report will provide the basis for a future public safety millage, according to township officials.

Relay for Life teams begin

With Dexter's second Relay for Life quickly approaching in June, teams are getting organized for the community event.

One team in particular is new and looking to establish itself.

Cornerstone Fitness in downtown Dexter has added itself to the list of teams participating in the American Cancer Society event.

The eight-member team is seeking donations to support the fight against cancer. The next Team Captains' Meeting is 7 p.m. April 15 at Dexter United Methodist Church, 7643 Huron River Drive.

Information on other teams, how to sign up and how to donate can be found at events.cancer.org/rfldextermi.

Whether you're supporting Team Cornerstone Fitness or another team, donations should be marked with the team name. Donors of $10 or more will receive a luminaria bag.

Lions White Cane Week

The annual Lions White Cane Week benefits the 18,000 blind people in the state each year. The event helps purchase and care for leader dogs.

Members will be selling miniature White Canes between April 25 and May 3 on streetcorners and in front of stores.

White Cane Week is a result of the White Cane Law in Michigan.

Lions Clubs also fund eye exams and eyeglasses for the vision impaired, as well as supporting Welcome Home for the Blind, Leader Dogs for the Blind, Michigan Eye Bank and Transportation Center, and other community service projects.
