For relatively small towns, Chelsea and Dexter athletes continue to make their marks on the collegiate and national levels.

At Bowling Green State University, Chelsea's Ali Mann scored 15 points and had four rebounds in the Falcons' 67-49 loss to Arizona State in the NCAA women's basketball tournament Sweet 16 last week at Greensboro, N.C. Behind Mann, a 6-foot-1 forward, BGSU (31-4) is the first Mid-American Conference women's basketball team to reach the Sweet 16.

On March 20, Mann scored 10 points, including a triple with 55 seconds left to seal the Falcons' 59-56 win over No. 2 seed Vanderbilt in a second round NCAA game in East Lansing.

To begin the tournament, BGSU beat Oklahoma State 70-66 at East Lansing. Mann led the Falcons with a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds. The double-double was Mann's 31st of the season. With the win, the Falcons became the first MAC women's team to win 30 games in a season.

For her efforts this year, Mann was named the MAC's co-Player of the Year with Western Michigan's Carrie Moore.

At the University of Michigan, Dexter's Lindsey Smith and Hannah Smith sparked the Wolverines' women's swimming and diving team to a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis March 8 through 10.

Behind the Smith sisters, Michigan earned its first top 10 national finish since 1999.

Individually, Lindsey Smith received All-American honors in five events. The senior finished sixth in the country in the 100 freestyle in 48.93 and seventh in the nation in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.97. She teamed with Hannah Smith to help U-M's 200 freestyle relay placed third in 1:28.80 and 12th in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:11.93. She also anchored the Wolverines' eighth-place 200 medley relay (1:39.37) and the 12th place 400 medley relay (3:38.91).

Hannah Smith earned All-American accolades in two events for U-M. The sophomore standout finished 23rd in the 200 backstroke in 1:58.05, 33rd in the 100 backstroke in 55.15 and 60th in the 50 freestyle in 23.39.

Last month, Lindsey Smith was named Swimmer of the Championships at the Big Ten meet in Minneapolis. She won Big Ten individual titles in the 100 freestyle in 49.04 and the 200 freestyle in 1:46.21. She teamed with Hannah Smith to win Big Ten crowns in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:29.88 and the 400 freestyle relay in 3:20.32. The Wolverines placed second overall with 562 points.

At Hope College, seniors Jacob Holton and Andre Bravo and freshman Jacob Heydlauff helped lead the Flying Dutchmen men's swimming and diving team to a second-place finish in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with a 4-1 record this past season.

Holton was part of Hope's 200 freestyle relay which clocked a season best 1:23.41 placing 10th in the nation at the NCAA Division III meet. Holton was also part of the Dutch 400 freestyle relay which finished 13th at the NCAA final with a season best time of 3:04.76.

As a team, Hope placed 21st in the nation.

Dexter freshman guard Jenny Cowen (5-9) earned a letter as a member of the Flying Dutchmen's women's basketball team this past year. Hope placed second in the MIAA.

Dexter freshman Emily Huddleston is a member of Michigan State University's Novice women's rowing team this spring. A walk-on to the Big Ten squad, Huddleston had never rowed competitively before this season.

At Alma College, Chelsea's Missy Morcom cranked her third home run of the season helping the Scots defeat visiting Defiance College 7-0, 12-0 in a softball doubleheader last Saturday. Alma is 11-7 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA.

At the University of Michigan, Dexter's Lindsay Davis tied for 81st shooting a 247 (75-81-91) at the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. March 11 through 12. A junior, Davis helped lead the Wolverines' women's golf team to a 12th-place finish with a score of 938.

On March 4, Davis finished a team-best sixth with a 150 (77-73) at the Red Rock Invitational in Sedona, Ariz. Behind Davis, U-M placed third in the tournament with a team score of 609.

Also competing on the nine-person Michigan women's golf team is Chelsea senior Julie Inwood.
