In an effort to raise awareness regarding brain tumors, three Mill Creek Middle School students banded together to create cell phone trinkets.
Thirteen-year-olds Jen Himle, Cameron Maisch and Lisa Crompton started "A Call for Hope" in February and sell cell phone charms at $5 each.
The girls were inspired by a friend's father who died of a brain tumor.
"They also know of two other acquaintances who have been fighting the disease," said Janice Franz, who said she's facilitating the fundraiser for the girls.
The fundraiser is set until April, but Franz said that if the venture is successful, then they may stick around longer.
Considering that the charms have raised about $580, business has been good.
And the good sales have surprised the girls.
"We started off with a goal of $500," Jen said. "We never expected this to take off as it has."
The girls make the charms at Franz's home twice a week for roughly two hours.
"We make about 20 charms in those two hours," Lisa said.
"They're very focused on this venture," Franz said. "They are dedicated and they make time to tend to it despite school, homework and activities, they're really invested in this fundraiser."
Proceeds from the sale go towards the American Brain Tumor Association.
The charms are currently available at the Foggy Bottom Coffee Shop, located at 7065 Dexter Ann Arbor Road, and Dexter Bike and Sport, LLC, located at 3173 Baker Road.
