Piranhas win league title

With the pool full of Sea Lions, Stingrays, Penguins, Eels, Otters, Sea Serpents and even a few Pirates, the Dexter Community Aquatics Club Piranhas chewed up the competition and claimed their sixth consecutive Southeast Michigan Swim League crown in convincing fashion.

In response to the title, Dexter coach Dave Gendernalik and assistant coaches Dede Daily, Eric Stanczyk, and Joe Aumiller went for a celebratory dunking at the Chelsea pool last Sunday afternoon with the help of the 11-12 year old squad.
The 8 and under group hit the pool first last Saturday in hopes of a piling up points and extending the DCAC hold of the championship title. The girls' squad placed three teams in the top 16 for the 100 medley relay with Emma Tamer, Daniella Rupert, Amelia Kinnard, and Madeline Kaufman placing second in 1:23.92, while Annette Schultz, Phoebe Sotiroff, Grace Kacmarek, and Jordan McGinnis grabbed third in 1:26.12 and Vedhika Raghunathan, Rebecca Messiter, Lydia Savatsky, and Heather Brouwer finished 12th in 1:38.09.
Sarah Zofchak captured fourth place in the 100 freestyle in 1:29.75, while teammate Savatsky placed sixth in 1:32.53, Raghunathan 13th in 1:47.48, and Annelise Luoma 17th in 2:08.48.
Tamer claimed fifth place in the 100 individual medley in 1:39.52 followed by Kinnard in seventh in 1:43.71, and Kacmarek in 11th in 1:48.06. In the 25 freestyle, Kaufman swam to a third-place finish in 17.09, while Zofchak was 13th in 18.72, Kacmarek 14th in 18.88, followed by McGinnis in 15th in 18.98. Luoma captured 32nd in 22.67 and Emma Schneider was 45th in 24.31 in a field of 90.
Schultz claimed second in the 25 butterfly in 19.34, while Kinnard was sixth in 21.72, Savatsky ninth in 22.53, Kacmarek 15th in 24.28, Jordan Maisch 21st in 26.87, and Luoma 32nd in 34.72. Kaufman placed fourth in the 50 freestyle in 39.19, followed by Rupert in 39.35, Sotiroff finished ninth in 42.04, McGinnis was 12th in 43.45, and Brouwer 31st in 54.24.
Tamer outdistanced the field in the 25 backstroke finishing first in 19.94, while Schultz was third in 20.41, Raghunathan eighth in 22.45, Zofchak 18th in 23.79, Maisch 20th in 24.32, Messiter finished 35th in 27.29, and Schneider 40th in 27.91.
Sotiroff led the charge in the 25 breaststroke placing third in 23.56, while Rupert claimed seventh in 24.58, Brouwer 20th in 29.91, Messiter 24th in 32.31, and Maisch 27th in 33.15.
McGinnis, Schultz, Rupert, and Kaufman landed second place in the 100 freestyle relay and Kinnard, Zofchak, Sotiroff, and Tamer placed third to finish the morning in first place in the girls' division.
The boys' 8 and under group started off with a third-place finish in the 100 medley relay as the squad of Alex Janosi, Andy Dolen, Kevin Kimmel, and Casey Dolen stopped the clock in 1:21.62. Kimmel led the Piranhas in the 100 freestyle by getting sixth place in 1:28.58 and Thomas Stanton placed 14th in 1:48.92. Andy Dolen took first-place honors in the 100 individual medley in 1:34.20, while Janosi was fourth in 1:35.78.
Andy Dolen placed 21st in the 25 freestyle in 20.75, while Brady Rosen took 27th in 22.41 and Owen Boquette was 34th in 24.15. Jack Schneider grabbed 43rd in 28.62, while William Bergdolt was 48th in 31.19 and Max Nevin 52nd in 33.26. Kimmel was third in the 25 butterfly with a time of 19.51 and Stanton was 10th in 28.53.
Boquette was 18th in the 50 freestyle finishing in 53.51, while Bergdolt claimed 23rd in 1:09.09. Janosi took top honors in the 25 backstroke in 18.73, while Casey Dolen placed 11th in 23.74, Thomas Griffith 18th in 25.04, Stanton 22nd in 27.03, Rosen two spots back in 28.57, Bergdolt grabbed 28th in 30.07, Schneider 42nd in 38.67, and Max Nevin three spots back in 42.75.
Andy Dolen took eighth place in the 25 breaststroke in 24.24, while fellow Piranhas Rosen and Scneider placed 18th and 24th, respectively. Andy Dolen, Casey Dolan, Kimmel and Janosi finished second in the 100 freestyle relay, while Stanton, Rosen, Bergdolt, and Boquette placed eighth to close out the morning session.
Going into the Saturday afternoon session, the Piranhas trailed the Saline Stingrays in the overall standings 752-578.
The 9- through 10-year-old girls' squad responded with three relay teams placing in the scoring column in the 200 medley relay led by second-place finishers Lizzy Merriman, Kate Mesaros, Reagan Maisch, and Allison Franz clocking in at 2:23.92. In third place with a time of 2:30.37 were Claire Stetten, Emmah Boquette, Ashley Sobczak, and Sarah Lynch. Nell Kacmarek, Megan Carr, Amanda Keenan, and Amanda Fileccia finished 14th in 3:02.37.
Franz turned in a time of 2:31.84 to take second in the 200 freestyle with Boquette claiming fifth in 2:42.70, Tya Chuanromanee eighth in 2:47.42, and Allison Schneider 15th in 3:00.95.
Merriman claimed first in the 100 individual medley in 1:17.95, while Maisch was fifth in 1:24.05, Lynch eighth in 1:24.90, and Stetten 13th in 1:27.07. Keenan took 29th, while Kacmarek was 31st, and Joy Hook 37th. Lynch swam to a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 31.98, while Boquette was eighth in 33.62, Mesaros 18th in 36.01, Kacmarek claimed 22nd in 36.84, Brooke Primeau 38th in 39.13, and Hook 56th in 42.14. Ryan Scherdt and Alexis Marsh posted personal best times in the event.
Sobczak posted a team best 36.06 in the 50 butterfly to take second place, while Maisch finished in 37.80 to take fourth, Chuanromanee was sixth in 39.13, Kaylee Witte posted a 39.68 to place ninth, Stetten finished 11th in 39.90, Carr grabbed 26th in 45.42, All Hauke placed 29th in 46.52, and Catie Prehoda finished 44th for the Piranhas.
Franz collected another second place medal in the 100 freestyle stopping the clock in 1:07.69. Sobczak took ninth place in 1:16.24, Chuanromanee was 15th in 1:18.66, Mesaros 20th in 1:21.66, and Fileccia 36th in 1:32.30. Merriman added another top finish in the 50 backstroke posting a 36.03, while Stetten was seventh, Witte eighth, Fileccia 15th, Kacmarek 20th, and Gretchen Schultz 29th. Personal bests were recorded by Primeau, Hauke, Scherdt, Marsh, and Prehoda.
Mesaros grabbed second in the 50 breaststroke in 44.43, while Carr was 14th in 46.99, Witte 28th in 52.41, and Keenan 33rd in 53.17. Prehoda, Primeau, and Marsh swam well in earlier heats.
Merriman, Maisch, Lynch, and Franz finished their day with a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay clocking in at 2:10.08, while Boquette, Chuanromanee, Sobczak, and Witte claimed fourth.
The boys racked up points in the 200 medley relay taking the top two spots with Zach Martell, Alex Nevin, Andrew Pek, and Rob Zofchak placing first in 2:23.78 and Ryan Stanton, Mason Opp, David Merz, and Ethan Reynolds finishing second in 2:35.28.
Zofchak bolted to victory in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:22.57, while Martell was second in 2:44.13, and Matthew Bergdolt sixth in 2:55.37. Stanton placed first in the 100 individual medley finishing in 1:18.79 with teammates Merz taking sixth in 1:28.64, Jake Nevin seventh in 1:29.14, and Griffin Beck grabbing 18th in 1:53.78.
Pek recorded a 31.44 in the 50 freestyle to get third place, while Opp placed seventh in 33.97, Reynolds touched in 34.03 good enough for eighth and Alex Nevin took 13th in 35.83. Will Wendorf, Jake Nevin, Kyle Reisman, Chris Seidleck, and Sean Seidleck all turned in personal best swims.
Pek was edged out at the finish of the 50 butterfly and took second in 34.16, while Merz Mike Bradshaw, and Bergdolt swept fifth through seventh and Ryan McGinnis placed 14th in 52.51. Zofchak added another first-place finish in the 100 freestyle in 1:05.18, while Bergdolt was eighth in 1:19.82, and Jake Nevin 11th in 1:20.82.
Stanton took home second in the 50 backstroke in 35.76, while Martell was third in 36.43, Beck 14th in 45.72, Reynolds next in 45.84. Wendorf placed 27th in 54.86, while Chris Seidleck was 32nd in 57.46, and Sean Seidleck 44th in 1:17.18.
Alex Nevin took second in the 50 breaststroke in 43.09, while Opp was fourth in 47.95, Jonathan King ninth in 51.01, and teammates McGinnis, Beck, and Reisman all placing in the top 25. The boys completed their day placing first in the 9- through 10-year-old age group by winning the 200 freestyle relay with the quartet of Stanton, Pek, Martell, and Zofchak finishing in 2:06.30, while Reynolds, Bergdolt, Opp, and Merz claimed fourth in 2:26.17.
