Officers elected

The Washtenaw County Historic District Commission elected officers for the 2008 calendar year.

Nancy Snyder of Ann Arbor was appointed as chair, Jean Ledwith King of Scio Township was named vice chair, and Martha Churchill of Milan is the new secretary-treasurer.

The county's historic district commission is the only countywide Certified Local Government in Michigan. As an authority independent of county government, the commission administers many local historic districts. These districts were designated as being in compliance with historic preservation standards.

Where the designation is awarded, the structure may enjoy tax credits and at a minimum is protected from damage or destruction in the future.

Other programs which the commission promotes throughout Washtenaw County include historical resource inventories, heritage tourism, historical markers and public workshops.

The commission is currently working with the county department of planning to designate county sites and trails which were important to Native-Americans.

Regular monthly meetings are at 5:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month on the second floor of the Western County Service Center 705 N. Zeeb Road in Scio Township.

Meeting agendas and related materials can be found at the county Web site, www.ewashtenaw.org.

Officials talk library

The Dexter District Library met with village officials on March 10 to discuss the potential sale of the current location at 8040 Fourth St.

The library is moving into a new building on Alpine which is under construction and is expected to be completed sometime in the fall.

According to Village President Shawn Keough, more time will be needed to reach a clear decision on the matter.

The village continues discussions on what to consider the boundaries for "downtown" Dexter, which will play a key role in where new village offices are located.

The library building is not within what some Village Council trustees consider the downtown area.

Soccer club registration

The Dexter Soccer Club will hold registration and evaluation on June 15 and 16.

Information signs will be placed at school drop-offs and various churches, similar to the Dexter Little League.

DDA appointment

Richard Bellas will fill a vacant seat on the Downtown Development Authority after his appointment was approved at Monday's meeting.

Bellas has previously served on the Dexter City Study Committee, as well as vice president of the State Street Area Association in downtown Ann Arbor, president of Think Local First in Ann Arbor and currently owns a business in downtown Ann Arbor.

Food Bank fund-raiser

The Big Boy Restaurant at 497 Zeeb Road will host a dinner on April 8 to raise money for the Dexter Food Bank.

The twist is that members of the Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors will comprise the waitstaff from 5 to 8 p.m.

"That's me too," said Jill Love, a DACC board member. "I haven't waited tables in a long time, so no guarantees of the service, but I'll try hard!"

All gratuities will go to the food bank, as well as 10 percent of total sales during the three-hour period. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and silent auction.

"The food will be good, the cause even better," Love said. "Help us jump-start the food bank location in Dexter."

Businesses wishing to help by donating products or services for the silent auction can drop off donations at the DACC office or call 426-0887 to arrange a pick-up.

Park commissioners needed

The Village of Dexter Parks Commission needs community-minded folks to step up to the plate and fill open seats.

Those interested in participating on the commission can submit an application to Allison Bishop at 8123 Main St. or abishop@villageofdexter.org.

Applications can be found at www.villageofdexter.org.

The Parks Commission meets the third Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. and is responsible for planning for the village's parks and recreation, as well as preparing the village's Parks and Recreation Master Plan.
