A 47-year-old Scio Township man contacted police March 14 at 10:15 a.m. to let them know that he was intending to take his own life and that he would need to be picked up, according to a police report from the Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority Police Department.

When police arrived at the scene 20 minutes later, he was dead from an apparent, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, said Cmdr. Victor Hess from the Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority Police Department.
The man was found near the Dexter-Huron Metropark on Huron River Drive just east of Mast Road.
Hess said that there weren't any signs of foul play and that drugs and alcohol didn't play a role in the death.
Hess said that the firearm, a replica of the historical black-powder revolver, belonged to the man and that it wasn't registered.
"He walked a great distance," Hess said. "There was nothing around him. He was in a wooded area. Based on interviews from family, we found no previous history of mental illness or any previous suicide attempts."
Hess said that the man had placed a red ball on the road so that police could easily locate his body.
