The hallowed halls of Dexter High School just got a little jazzier.
A new mural has just been completed outside the Library front doors. Based on the theme "Knowledge is Power," the mural is the graphic representation of the arm of Prometheus, bringing the fire of knowledge to mankind, and is the new logo for the Library Science department.
The mural was designed by Corrie Fletcher, (DHS graduate 2005), as a community service project, and painted by the Academy of Graphic Technology students Cody Bowlds and Kyle Cozart as part of the requirements of their graphic communications class. Clocking in at 30 hours of design time, and 340 hours of paint time, the mural was anything but a slam-dunk.
A Dexter hometown girl, Corrie is currently a junior at the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning, and was asked to design the mural as a community service project. She envisioned the mural as a classical, art deco emblem of scholarship. She used as her muse the Greek legend of Prometheus.
"Prometheus seized fire from the Gods and gave it to Man, for man's betterment and survival," Corrie said. "I wanted the design to be simple, but powerful. The strong rays of light emanating from the torch, held in the hand of a powerful warrior. I wanted to make a graphic statement that knowledge truly is power, that education can light the way, and dispel the dark forces of fear, hatred and bias."
Dennis Stockwell, the graphic arts instructor for Dexter High School, couldn't be more pleased with the mural.
"One of the goals of my Graphic X curriculum is to expand the kid's experiences with graphic communication," he said.
"Students should be able to use universal communication skills in dealing with a customer to produce a graphic product that the customer can approve of. The mural concept has been developed over the years, as a platform for this type of communication."Cody and Kyle, like all my students, were required to practice real life skills for the work force.
Communicating with an adult, the client, is a valuable part of my program and addresses the school to work transition."
Cody added: "Painting the mural was a good learning experience. This was something that I've never done before, to create a piece of artwork like this, to work with a client, the designer, to create an ultimate finished product that was satisfying to the customer. This was something new for me and very rewarding."
Kyle Cozart said, "We didn't really have to be artistic to do this mural, but we had to be meticulous in following the design. It took a long time, but it was definitely worth it."
The Library Science students agree: the hallway couldn't be jazzier, and the Library Science Department now has a new logo.
