Dexter High School entered two teams in the Regional Great Lakes Ocean Sciences Bowl last month and earned first and fourth place finishes. The competition, held at the University of Michigan, included 15 teams from Ohio and Michigan.

The National Ocean Bowl held 25 regional meets in the country on Feb 10.
Dexter's A team Captain Scott Sarver, Emily France, Melany Mioduszewski, Jon Wike and Will Grundler were undefeated all day. They seeded first place in the morning competition and beat Ann Arbor's Huron High in the afternoon single elimination finals competition for the overall gold medal.The Dexter first-place team received $500, medals, certificates and a first-place trophy plaque. Each member also received a scholarship for one-year tuition at the University of Alaska.
The team will compete at the National competition April 27-30 at Stony Brook University in Long Island, N.Y.
The DHS B team (Captain Cassie Hall, Chris Henes, Ton Bach , Justin Wike and Aidan Shapiro-Leighton) were the only B team to reach the quarterfinals.
"They are the only B team I can ever remember reaching the quarterfinals in nine years," said DHS teacher Cheryl Wells. "They are using their prize money for oceanographic texts and research materials."
Oceanography questions cover chemistry, physics, geology, geography, history, technology and marine biology. Questions are toss-up, bonus and challenge with pool play in the morning and single elimination in the afternoon.
"We have practiced two times a week since October and three to four days a week since January," Wells said.
First prize at nationals is two weeks of marine biology research in Hawaii.
