The Chelsea City Council approved the appointment of John Hansen as the interim city manager, replacing Michael Steklac, who resigned from the position last month after being told his contract would not be renewed.

Hansen, who said he is not interested in the full-time position and will not apply for the opening, is well known in and around Washtenaw County. The longtime Dexter resident spent years in the Dexter Community School District, including long stints as the Dexter High School principal (1974-1984) and the superintendent (1984-1998).
He also served Chelsea and the surrounding areas in the Michigan Legislature when he was a state representative from 1999 to 2002.
More recently Hansen was the interim superintendent for the Brighton Area Schools (2006) and interim manager in Scio Township (2005).
Hansen is excited about his new job and has already begun making the rounds, meeting people he is expected to lead over the next few months. "As an interim manager with no interest in the position I believe I can be more effective since I don't want the job," Hansen said. "It's important to get an interim in place right away so the citizens know and understand that someone is in place and things are getting done as usual. The department heads need to know there is a boss and the council has to have someone in charge that they can go to."
