Though there is no doubt that change is difficult for everyone, especially large institutions like a public high school, Dexter High School has been making tremendous strides toward being ready to open its doors next September with a very different look.† In brief, this change has been caused by the implementation of the Michigan Merit Curriculum at DHS.† The class of 2011, this year's 9th graders, are required to pass many more required core classes to receive a diploma.† Dexter educators wanted to make sure that high school students had at least as many if not more choices in classes.† To that end, after much investigation, the staff has decided to implement a trimester schedule next year.
Changing from a semester to trimester schedule will offer all of our students opportunities for improved learning.† To begin with, all students will have to pass the classes that are part of the rigorous Michigan Merit Curriculum.† This is an effort to ensure that all high school students are ready for the rigors of post-high school training, a two-year, or a four-year college.† Our economy is such, particularly in Michigan, that students must have a better education to be competitive in Michigan and be able successful young adults.†††
However, meeting the rigors of the MMC are not the only advantage to a trimester system.† We will be able to allow our students the choices they have not had before.† They will be able to take a rigorous curriculum but continue to participate in our elective classes.† In fact, some students may take more "academic" classes because they will have more room in their schedule.
In addition, some of our "at-risk" students who are in danger of not graduating on time will be helped by the addition of lab classes next year.† Students will be scheduled into these classes the same term as the academic classes they have the most trouble with.† This way they get a double dose of that class during the day with one hour being instruction and the other in a smaller lab setting with two teachers and a smaller class size.
Overall, we look forward to the challenge of the trimester schedule.† It will be a tough change for all of us but we firmly believe it will be the best way to deliver a quality and diverse curriculum and ensure success for Dexter High School students.
