Dreads dive into state meet

Ten Dexter boys' swimming and diving team members will represent the Dreadnaughts at this year's Division II state meet Friday through Saturday at Oakland University.

Competition begins at noon Friday with preliminary races. The finals are noon Saturday.
Cost to attend the event is $6 for preliminaries and $7 for finals. Ticket sales start at 9:30 a.m. both days. There are no advanced sales.
"We have a young, talented team this year with only one senior (Kirk Kumbier) qualifying for the state meet," said Dexter coach Michael McHugh. "We look forward to the opportunity to improve not only our times, but our place from last year's state meet."
Dexter tankers qualified for the state final include Kirk Kumbier in the 100 breaststroke, 200 individual medley, the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.
Dreadnaught Danny Rion qualified in the 200 medley relay and the 100 backstroke, while Rob Spiegel will race in the 200 medley relay, 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly and the 200 freestyle relay.
Dexter's Joey Sayre qualified in the 200 medley relay, 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay, while Ben Steavenson will participate in the 200 individual medley, 500 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay.
Dreadnaught Scott Crompton will take part in the diving competition, while Walker McHugh qualified in the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay.
"Scott is looking forward to good competition at states," said Dexter dive coach Manny Billegas.
Dexter's Scott Dyer qualified in the 500 freestyle, while Jacob Wiltse will compete in the 400 freestyle relay and Taylor Verna in the 100 breaststroke and the 400 freestyle relay.
The Dreads finished first in the Southeastern Conference White Division this past season. The league title was Dexter's ninth title in a row. Rounding out the SEC White Division standings were Tecumseh in second place, followed by Chelsea in third and Ypsilanti Lincoln in fourth position.
Last year, the Dreadnaughts placed 15th in the state meet with 54 points.
Winning the Division II state title last season was Birmingham Groves with 325 points. Midland Dow was second with 216 points, while Birmingham Seaholm was third with 167 points.
Chelsea finished 18th with 34 points, while Tecumseh was 21st with 30 points.
