Dreads place second in league

Dexter volleyball advanced to the quarterfinals of the Ann Arbor Huron Invitational last Saturday, bowing out against county rival Chelsea 23-25, 25-16, 14-16.

In pool play, the Dreadnaughts (29-18-4) defeated Sterling Heights 25-23, 25-14 and Milan 25-6, 25-14. Dexter lost to Dearborn 24-26, 21-25.

Individually, junior outside hitter Courtney Krips (5-foot-7) led Dexter's attack with 22 kills.

Sophomore outside hitter Colleen Lasecki (5-5) added 22 digs and seven aces, while senior middle blocker Camille Hanks (6-0) had seven blocks and eight aces.

Senior defensive specialist Heather Bradshaw (5-6) sparked the Dreadnaughts with 33 digs, while junior outside hitter Cheyenne Kitchen (5-7) had seven aces.

Senior setter Rosie Lee (5-6) finished with 46 assists, while junior setter Sonya Lewis (5-8) had 24 assists for Dexter.

Last Thursday, the Dreadnaughts competed in the Southeastern Conference White Division tournament placing second behind Chelsea.

Dexter beat host Ypsilanti Lincoln 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 and Chelsea 25-19, 25-14, 26-24. The Dreadnaughts lost to Tecumseh 19-25, 25-10, 27-29, 18-25.

Chelsea captured the league championship.

Individually for Dexter, junior outside hitter Katie Ryan (5-5) and Krips led the squad with 17 kills apiece.

Hanks ended up with 10 aces and eight blocks, while Bradshaw had 52 digs.

Lee recorded 43 assists and nine aces, while Lewis had 36 aces for the Dreadnaughts.

On Feb. 20, Dexter defeated visiting Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard 25-17, 25-8, 25-17.

Lasecki led the Dreadnaughts with seven kills and three aces.

Hanks had five blocks, while senior middle blocker Liz Umstead (5-8) had two blocks for Dexter.

Senior outside hitter Margot Parin and Kitchen each added three kills, while junior outside hitter Mariah Hill had two kills and Sheree Christian one kill for the Dreadnaughts.

Bradshaw paced Dexter with seven digs.

Lee had 13 assists, while Lewis had 11 assists.

The Dreadnaughts next participate in the Class A state district tournament 9 a.m. at Adrian Saturday.

Dexter opens district play against the winner of Saline-Tecumseh in the district semifinal.

The district's other semifinal pits the host Maples against the winner of Ann Arbor Huron-Ann Arbor Pioneer.

The district championship is at 1:30 p.m.
