Additionally, they sent thank-you notes and Christmas cards to military men and women serving in other locations around the world.
Just in time for Easter, the CFMC Junior High Youth Group is again preparing packages for soldiers and writing letters expressing appreciation to our men and women in service to our country.
Kathy Zeigler of Chelsea is the mother of a Marine currently serving in Iraq, and is assisting the youth group with the project.
"Jeanne Ruikka is the Youth Group helper who initiated this project, collected information from the Operation Gratitude Web site about what to send, and provided for the mailing," Zeigler said.
"The youth group responded with great enthusiasm and generosity in filling boxes.
"Jeanne and I worked together making phone calls to gather the names and addresses of the military men and women that care packages and thank-you and Christmas cards were sent to."
Zeigler said the youth group hopes to send the next batch of care packages early in March to reach Chelsea-area servicemen and women deployed to Iraq and the Middle East by Easter, March 23; as well as send thank-you notes to area soldiers serving elsewhere.
To do that, the youth group is asking family and friends in the community for names and addresses of service members for this project.
"It's amazing, I keep running into people who know other soldiers who are on their way to Iraq," Zeigler said.
"Sometimes people don't know what we're doing and it just comes up in conversation."
Please contact Zeigler with the information at 475-2312.
"I'm thinking God is providing this information, it will help if people see this and make a phone call to me," Zeigler said.
"May God bless and protect those who serve, and those who wait," Zeigler said.
