Dreadnaught tankers fall to Tecumseh

PUBLISHED: February 22, 2007

Dexter's boys' swimming and diving team hosted Tecumseh last Friday in its last dual meet of the season, defeating the Indians, 104-82. The loss brought the Dreadnaughts' dual meet record to 4-5 for the season.

Dexter had some tight battles this year, with two of the losses coming against Toledo St. Francis and Saline by six point margins. The remaining losses this year were to Division I state powers Ann Arbor Pioneer and Livonia Stevenson.

Dexter's dual meet victories this season came against Milan, Adrian, Ypsilanti Lincoln, and Chelsea.

The Tecumseh meet was Senior Night for the Dreadnaughts. The team honored its three outgoing seniors Johno Wilson, Nate Cook, and Kirk Kumbier, along with their parents. All three swimmers were four-year letter winners for the Dreadnaughts and made key contributions to the Dexter program during their high school careers.

"This year's senior class was a great class," said Dexter coach Michael McHugh. "They worked hard every day and did what was asked of them. They set a good example for the younger guys, showing them how to act and lead a team. These three seniors helped me out all year long. I couldn't have done it without them.

"Johno kept things light. He was always good for a laugh, but when the situation called for him to be serious and a leader, he always stepped up.

"Nate was the silent leader type. He didn't say too much, he just went about his business and did what was needed, not only for him, but for the entire team.

"Kirk has all the traits a good leader should. He spoke up when needed, always did what was best for the team, and was an extremely hard worker."

Cook and Kumbier are co-captains for the Dreadnaughts.

The meet opened with a second-place finish for the Dreadnaughts in the 200 medley relay. Danny Rion, Robert Spiegel, Joey Sayre and Kumbier touched in 1:46.98.

Dexter scored three swimmers in the 200 freestyle. Derek Wooton finished second in 1:57.20, while Scott Dyer and Karl Kumbier captured fourth and fifth place, respectively.

The Dreadnaughts also put three in the scoring column in the 200 individual medley. Kirk Kumbier won the event in a state cut time of 2:07.20. Ben Steavenson was second and Jacob Wiltse came in fourth.

Walker McHugh sprinted into first in the 50 freestyle, clocking a time of 24.16. Sayre placed third, just an eye blink behind.

Dexter's Scott Crompton won the one-meter diving competition with 196.27 points. The win, Compton's sixth, qualified him for the diving regionals. Corey Presley finished fifth.

In the 100 butterfly, Spiegel grabbed second with a season-best time of 59.14. Sayre captured fifth place.

Taylor Verna and Matt Cambridge placed third and fifth, respectively, in the 100 freestyle for Dexter.

In the 500 freestyle, Dyer and Wooton finished third and fourth for the Dreadnaughts.

In a race that came down to the last stroke, Dexter touched second in the 200 free relay. The sprint foursome of Kirk Kumbier, McHugh, Sayre and Spiegel finished in 1:36.08, a hair behind Tecumseh's 1:35.93. Cambridge, Wilson, Wiltse, and Dyer combined for third place.

In the 100 backstroke, Steavenson and Rion scored for the Dreads, picking up third and fourth place.

In another tight race, Kirk Kumbier was edged out in the 100 breaststroke. But with a clocking of 1:02.38, Kumbier continued to lower his state qualifying time. Verna grabbed third place and Cambridge picked up fifth.

The Dexter squadron of Spiegel, McHugh, Steavenson, and Verna combined to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:42.68. Tim Pituch, Wootn, Cook and Wiltse finished third.

The Dreadnaughts next compete in the Southeastern Conference championship meet Friday and Saturday at Saline.

Preliminaries begin on Friday, with finals starting on Saturday. Competition begins at noon both days.
