Locals lead Kenyon to 23rd title

PUBLISHED: February 21, 2008

Chelsea's Kara Stiles and Dexter's Kirk Kumbier helped Kenyon College (OH) capture the North Coast Athletic Conference championship, the 23rd title for the Kenyon men's and women's teams.

Stiles, a junior swimmer for the Kenyon Ladies, scored in three events including two top eight finishes. Stiles placed eighth in both the 200 individual medley (2:13.05) and 200 breaststroke (2:34.35). She also swam 1:57.33 to capture ninth place in the 200 freestyle.

Kumbier, a freshman on the Kenyon Lords, also scored in three events. Two of these were top eight finishes, as Kumbier swam 2:08.79 to place fourth in the 200 breaststroke and 58.86 to place fifth in the 100 breaststroke. These times were within 0.19 and 0.07 seconds, respectively, of the NCAA "B" national cuts for Division III. Kumbier also earned 14th place in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:19.06.

The Kenyon Lords surpassed rival Denison University on the third and final day of competition to win, 1633-1598. The Kenyon Ladies edged Denison 1630-1615, with the outcome decided on the final race of the meet.

Other schools competing included Wabash, Wittenberg, Wooster, Allegheny, Hiram, Ohio Wesleyan, and Oberlin.
