Dexter faces state's best

PUBLISHED: February 15, 2007

Dexter's boys' swimming and diving team participated in the Michigan Inter-scholastic Swim Coaches Association invitational on Saturday at Eastern Michigan University. The meet draws many of the top Division I and II swimmers from across the state of Michigan.

To qualify for the meet, swimmers must achieve MISCA cut times and then be within the top 60 swimmers entered in their event. No team scores are tallied.

The Dreadnaughts entered Jones Pool less than 18 hours after an emotional dual meet victory in Chelsea the night before. Nevertheless, they delivered some excellent performances including one new state cut and one near miss.

The foursome of Danny Rion, Kirk Kumbier, Robert Spiegel, and Joey Sayre finished 23rd in the 200 medley relay, earning their state cut in a time of 1:45.50. This year's qualifying standard of 1:45.79 is 2.4 seconds faster than last year, and had been elusive thus far this season.

In the 200 individual medley, Kumbier finished 26th with a time of 2:06.99 and Steavenson 42nd in 2:09.93. Both were below the state cut.

Steavenson did go a season best 5:08.65 to lower his state cut time in the 500 freestyle and finish 45th.

The 200 freestyle relay of Walker McHugh Sayre, Spiegel and Kumbier clocked a time of 1:34.23 to finish 28th. Similar to the medley relay cut, the 200 freestyle relay standard was lowered 1.6 seconds this season and has been a challenge to achieve.

Kumbier placed eighth in the 100 breaststroke, slightly lowering his state cut with a season best 1:02.48. Taylor Verna placed 45th in a time of 1:07.51.

In the 400 freestyle relay, Jacob Wiltse, Sayre, Spiegel and Verna combined for a time of 3:34.22, finishing 44th.

"We have thee guys individually qualified for states, and we qualified our first relay for states here at MISCA, so things are starting to fall into place for us," said Dexter coach Michael McHugh.

"With the Southeastern Conference meet only two weeks away, we now start focusing on getting ready for championships."

The Dreadnaughts next host Tecumseh Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Dexter will be celebrating Senior Night against the Indians.

On Feb. 23 through 24, Dexter will participate in the SEC meet at Saline.
