Dreadnaughts lap Chelsea, Lincoln

Dexter's boys' swimming and diving team traveled to Lincoln and Chelsea last week, and brought home two victories.

Last Friday, against Chelsea, the Dreadnaughts delivered some big swims against their rival, overcoming some strong Bulldog performances to win 108-78.
"I didn't know how intense this rivalry was," said first year Dexter coach Michael McHugh. "But now I do and I'm glad we were able to come away with the win."
Kirk Kumbier and Ben Steavenson each captured two first-place finishes, with Taylor Verna and Scott Crompton picking up one each. Chelsea took two of the three relays.
The Dreadnaughts kicked off the meet in high gear, capturing first and second place in the 200 medley relay. Danny Rion, Kirk Kumbier, Robert Spiegel, and Joey Sayre claimed the victory in 1:46.54. Steavenson, Verna, Johno Wilson, and Nate Cook combined for second.
Derek Wooton clocked a strong 1:56.71 to place third in the 200 freestyle, followed by Scott Dyer in fourth and Tim Pituch in fifth for the Dreadnaughts.
Dexter swept the top thee spots in the 200 individual medley, with Steavenson touching first in a state cut time of 2:08.95. Spiegel finished second and Matt Cambridge third.
In the 50 freestyle, Kumbier sprinted to first in 23.63. Sayre grabbed second and Walker McHugh touched fifth for the Dreadnaughts.
Crompton nailed some clutch dives to score 191.30 points and win the diving competition. Dexter teammate Corey Presley finished fourth.
Kumbier won the 100 butterfly, earning a state cut with a time of 57.46. Spiegel and Rion finished third and fourth, respectively for the Dreadnaughts.
In the 100 freestyle, Verna and Sayre tied for second in 52.79, while McHugh grabbed fourth place.
In the 500 freestyle, Dyer, Wooton, and Karl Kumbier went two-three-four to pick up points for Dexter.
The 200 freestyle relay went down to the wire, with Chelsea edging the Dreads by an eye blink. Kirk Kumbier, Sayre, Spiegel and McHugh combined for the second-place finish in 1:34.95.
Steavenson took first in the 100 backstroke, recording a state cut time of 1:00.39. Nate Cook finished in fourth place.
Dexter again swept the first three places in the 100 breaststroke. Verna was the winner, followed by Cambridge in second and Wilson in third for the Dreadnaughts.
In the 400 freestyle relay, the foursome of McHugh, Wiltse, Steavenson, and Verna combined for second place with a time of 3:40.46.
On Feb. 7 Dexter defeated the Ypsilanti Lincoln, 146-35.
In the 200 medley relay, the Dreadnaught combination of Kirk Kumbier, Kevin Butler, Sayre and Steavenson joined forces to dominate the field. Dyer, Spiegel, Cook, and Shawn Greco took second.
Cambridge, Pituch, and Liam Donevan finished first, second and third in the 200 free.
Verna won the 200 IM, followed by Rion and Wooton in second and third place.
Walker was the victor in the 50 free, with Wiltse claiming second and Ryan Aliapoulios third.
In the dive competition, Crompton surpassed the 200 point threshold, with a winning score of 205.30. Presley claimed second place with a personal best 138.90.
Karl Kumbier captured first in the 100 butterfly. Butler and Andrew Leonard finished second and third, respectively.
Cook won the 100 free, with Jesse Claflin and Greco adding points for the Dreads in third and fourth place.
Spiegel cruised to victory in the 500 freestyle. Tyler Steeb placed second and Wilson finished third.
Karl Kumbier, Wiltse, Wooton, and Cook joined forces to win the 200 free relay. McHugh, Pituch, Greco, and Aliapoulios grabbed second place.
In the 100 back, Kirk Kumbier touched first, followed by Sayre in second and Verna in third.
Steavenson won the 100 breaststroke, while Dyer picked up second and Rion took third.
The quartet of Dyer, Sayre, Karl Kumbier and Steavenson finished first in the 400 free relay. Wiltse, Donevan, Rion, and Cambridge teamed up for second.
"It was a good week swimming-wise," said Coach McHugh. "Many of the guys are still swimming lifetime bests and continuing to get better each week."
Dexter hosts Tecumseh at 6:30 tonight for Senior Night, the final dual meet of the season.
