Mill Creek hosts Saline

A tidal wave of excitement swept over the Dexter Community Pool Jan. 31 as Dexter's Mill Creek Middle School swimming and diving team hosted Saline in its last dual meet of the season.

The meet started off with a narrow victory for Dexter in the 200 medley relay. The team of Stephen Sobczak, Austin Daugherty, Casey Edwards and Josh Boren posted a time of 1:56.88, beating the Saline team by one second. The Dexter relay team of Katie Taylor, Ian Wilson, Lisa Crompton and Noelle Stabler came in third with a time of 2:07.69.
In the 200 freestyle, Dexter's Jake Claflin placed third with a time of 2:12.29. Matt Nelson and Megan Day also turned in fine showings placing fifth and sixth, respectively.
Boren came in for a close second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 27.63. Nicole Minzey and Jennifer Himle also posted fast times in this event.
Edwards took the win in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:03.03. Melissa Vesey took third with a time of 1:09.86. Clocking in at 1:11.98, Cassandra Cowhy took fourth.
In the 500 freestyle Laura Steavenson came in third with a personal best time of 5:41.07. Claflin took fifth with a time of 6:03.24, while Brandon Verna was sixth with a clocking of 6:42.24.
Dexter swimmers took third, fourth and fifth in the 100 freestyle. Paige Garwood clocked in at a time of 1:00.57 with Daugherty right on her heels at 1:00.91. Minzey took fourth clocking 1:02.11.
Dexter came in solid at second and third place in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Kyle Franz, Garwood, Minzey and Edwards were just touched out by the Saline team but finished with at time of 1:49.67. Nelson, Hailey Sheats, Lindsey Gagneau, Nelson and Himle pulled out a third place finish with a time of 1:57.15.
Sobczak and Boren took first and second in the 100 backstroke. Sobczak posted a time of 59.04 while Boren finished at 1:07.70. Vesey took fifth with a time of 1:11.89.
The team of Taylor, Boren, Sobczak, and Steavenson tied for first place in the 400 freestyle relay with a time 3:52.13. The Dexter relay of Nate Killian, Claflin, Minzey and Vesey finished fourth at 4:17.00 while the team of Molly Keenan, Crompton, Cowhy and Day took fifth clocking in at 4:29.30.
The Dexter divers put in yet another good performance against the Hornets. Brandon Schlei led the Mariners again placing second with a score of 161.25 while Morgan Eisele and Courtney Young finished with scores of 118.10 and 117.75, respectively.
Many members of Mill Creek's swimming and diving team capped their season by participating in the Michigan Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association Meet in Holt.
The Mariners had an excellent showing against some of the top middle school competition in the area.
Stephen Sobczak got the Mariners started with a convincing win in the 200 freestyle clocking a blistering 1:56.52. Sobczak also took first in the 100 freestyle (54.05).
Laura Steavenson provided one of the most exciting swims of the day posting at time of 2:02.63 to win the 200 freestyle.
Casey Edwards brought the Mill Creek fans to their feet with a record-breaking first place swim in the 100 yard freestyle (55.58) eclipsing the long-standing Mill Creek record formerly held by current coach Cari Carr. Edwards followed up this outstanding performance with finishing a close second in the 50 yard freestyle.
Mill Creek also took top honors in three relays, the boys' 200 freestyle (Stephen Sobczak, Nate Kilian, Austin Daugherty, Jake Klaflin); the girls' 200 freestyle (Laura Steavenson, Katie Taylor, Paige Garwood, Casey Edwaards) and the 400 freestyle (Laura Steavenson, Lindsey Gagneau, Katie Taylor, Melissa Vesey).
Other outstanding swims were turned in by Josh Boren and Austin Daugherty placing third in the 100 backstroke and the 100 breaststroke, respectively.
Katie Taylor also turned in a fast swim placing fourth in the 200 freestyle. Lisa Crompton also had an excellent meet with a fine second-place showing in the 100 backstroke in addition to finishing third in the 50 butterfly.
Overall, the Mariners outshined the competition and put a fine finishing touch on their successful season.
The Mariner divers also ended their outstanding season at MISCA.
Brandon Schlei continued his leadership of the Mariners by finishing second with a score of 196.5 points. The Mill Creek girls were led by Morgan Eisele who finished fourth scoring 162.85 points.
Courtney Young rounded out the strong performance of the Mill Creek dive team finishing in 11th place.
