The game started slowly for both clubs as the Dreadnaughts (5-12, 5-9 Southeastern Conference) led 2-0 after one quarter.
"I don't think I've ever seen a quarter like that," said Dexter coach Mike Bavineau. "It was a physical game. Neither team could get into a rhythm."
In the second quarter, the River Rats heated up outscoring Dexter 16-2 taking a 16-4 lead into the break.
In the third quarter, Huron outscored the Dreadnaughts 11-6 increasing its advantage to 27-10 entering the fourth frame.
In the fourth quarter, the River Rats secured their win recording 10 points, while holding Dexter to seven points for the contest's final margin.
Senior guard Kelsey Johnson (5-foot-9) led the Dreadnaughts with eight points.
Junior guard Amy Baldus added three points, while senior Geo Rutherford, senior Breanne Svihra and junior Brittany Walls each had two points for Dexter.
"Their (Huron's) defensive pressure took us out of our rhythm," Bavineau said. "We also didn't shoot any free throws. We need to try and attack the basket to get to the free throw line."
On Feb. 5, host Ann Arbor Pioneer defeated the Dreadnaughts 45-28.
"We beat them early in the year," Bavineau said. "We might have had a false sense of confidence. Pioneer, though, played a good game."
Pioneer led 10-6 after the first quarter.
At the break, Ann Arbor increased its margin to 26-11.
In the third quarter, Dexter outscored the Pioneers 8-6 cutting Ann Arbor's lead to 32-19 entering the fourth stanza.
In the fourth quarter, Pioneer outscored the Dreadnaughts 13-9 for the game's ending outcome.
Baldus led Dexter with 10 points.
Senior Sherri Gamble and junior Jean Snyder each added three points, while Johnson, Walls and Rutherford each had two points for the Dreadnaughts.
"We can't give up 16 points in the second quarter," Bavineau said. "It's tough for us to come back. But we competed and played hard in the second half. That's always a positive."
Dexter next hosts Tecumseh Friday at 7 p.m.
The Dreadnaughts begin Class A state district play Wednesday taking on the winner of Ann Arbor Huron-Jackson at 5:30 p.m. at South Lyon.
If successful, Dexter would play in the district final Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. South Lyon is hosting the tournament.
South Lyon plays Pinckney to open the district Monday. On Wednesday, Ann Arbor Pioneer plays the winner.
