U-M prevails over All-Stars

By Don Richter, Sports Editor

PUBLISHED: February 8, 2007

Despite the hopes of many, Amadou Ba, the 6-foot-11 former University of Michigan basketball player didn't dunk, but Antoine "The Judge" Joubert, a Detroit schoolboy legend and former Wolverine hoops star, did manage to nail a few shots from outside the 734 area code during last Saturday's sixth annual fund-raiser game against the Dexter All-Stars.

The event, which benefits Dreadnaught athletics, pits former U-M athletic standouts against a team of Dexter teachers, coaches and administrators. The game was at the Dexter High School gymnasium.

The event was sponsored by the Teaching, Educating and Mentoring group (TEAM).

As has been the case the previous five years, the Wolverines prevailed, defeating the All-Stars 94-44.

"I was real pleased with the Michigan players that came," said Dexter head football coach and event organizer Tom Barbieri. "They did a great job with all the kids."

At halftime of the game, fans of all ages lined up for autographs. Besides the former U-M standouts, spectators could also meet and receive autographs from current Wolverine football players Quinton Patilla, Robbie Thornblad, Marques Slocum, Obie Ezeh and former Dexter All-State quarterback and U-M team member Jeff Ziegler. The current Michigan players didn't participate in the game.

Also at the break, Dexter youth basketball teams each scrimmaged for approximately five minutes. Boys' youth teams taking part in the halftime festivities included the Razorbacks, Wildcats, Bulldogs, Tigers, Mavericks, Cavaliers, Bulls, Pistons, Heat and Suns. A game between fifth- and sixth-grade youth girls' teams was also played.

Raffles and prizes were also doled out at the break.

Leading the U-M squad was former football tight end Andy Mignery with 17 points.

Ali Houssain, a former Wolverine baseball player, added 14 points, while Joubert had 13 points.

Former football defensive back Tait Shanski finished with 10 points, while linebacker Clint Copenhaver had nine points and Ba eight points for U-M.

Former football linebacker Alex Marshall had seven points, while former basketball guards Dugan Fife and Ann LeMere each netted six points for Michigan.

Former All-American football defensive end Mark Messner had three points and former defensive back Tad Van Pelt two points for the Wolverines.

For the Dexter All-Stars, Dave Evanski, Ed Bostic and Jaime Dudash each had six points to lead the team.

Fred Ligrow and Kathryn Day each added four points, while Tim Bergstrom, Ryan Baese, Bruce Chaffee and Mike Bavineau each had three points for the All-Stars.

Bavineau, Dexter's girls' basketball coach, had the night's most memorable and also most unorthodox shot, swishing a three-pointer from just inside midcourt near the scorer's table as the third quarter buzzer sounded. Bavineau not only was able to drill the shot, but he made it shooting underhanded from between his legs. The circus shot not only drew the loudest ovation of the game, but brought the entire U-M team off the bench to high-five with Bavineau.

"That was an amazing shot," Barbieri said.

Angie Scott, Dick Lundy and Ken Koenig rounded out Dexter's scoring with two points apiece.
