PUBLISHED: February 8, 2007

Dexter's boys' swimming and diving team dropped two tough meets on the road last week falling to Livonia Stevenson and Saline.

On Jan. 30, the visiting Dreadnaughts fell to Stevenson, 113-72.

Last Friday versus host Saline, Dexter lost 96-90.

The Dreads have one of the area's toughest schedules.

Against Stevenson, senior Kirk Kumbier and junior Ben Steavenson each captured first- and second-place finishes with season best swims. Steavenson's victory in the 500 freestyle earned him a state cut in that event.

The meet opened with Dexter taking second in the 200 medley relay. Danny Rion, Robert Spiegel, Walker McHugh and Kumbier combined to swim 1:46.83, inching closer to the state cut. At 1:45.79, the qualifying standard is 2.4 seconds faster than last year.

Steavenson swam 1:56.85 to place second in the 200 freestyle, while Scott Dyer picked up third.

In the 200 individual medley, Kumbier lowered his state qualifying time to 2:06.50 in capturing the win. Jacob Wiltse placed fifth for Dexter.

Joey Sayre and Taylor Verna sprinted to second and third place, respectively, in the 50 freestyle.

In one-meter diving, Scott Crompton tallied 182.10 points to grab second place for the Dreads. Corey Presley scored a personal best 117.45 to take fourth.

Sayre and Rion finished third and fourth, respectively, for Dexter in the 100 butterfly.

In the 100 freestyle, Spiegel, Johno Wilson, and Wiltse placed third, fourth, and fifth, respectively for the Dreadnaughts.

Steavenson paced the field in the 500 freestyle, leading from start to finish and clocking a state qualifying time of 5:09.20. Verna finished third, while Tyler Steeb was fifth.

In the 200 freestyle relay, the Dexter quartet of Sayre, Spiegel, McHugh, and Kumbier went 1:35.59 to capture second place.

Spiegel and Kevin Butler were third and fourth, respectively, in the 100 backstroke.

In the 100 breaststroke, Kumbier dropped his state cut time to 1:02.60 placing second. Matt Cambridge and Wilson added points for the Dreads in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

The foursome of Verna, Steavenson, Wiltse, and Sayre clocked a 3:37.66 to earn second place in the 400 freestyle relay.

It was Saline's Senior Night last Friday, but the Dreadnaughts stepped up to give the Hornets a run for their money.

Derek Wooton, Kirk Kumbier, Spiegel, Dyer, and Steavenson were all individual winners for Dexter, with Steavenson earning a new state cut in the backstroke.

The Dreadnaught distance swimmers came up big, sweeping the top three spots in both events.

Wooton led the pack in the 200 freestyle, touching in 1:58.62. Wiltse and Karl Kumbier placed second and third.

In the 500 freestyle, it was Dyer, Wooton, and Karl Kumbier going one-two-three, with Dyer clocking a 5:23.17.

Kicking off the meet, the Dexter medley relay of Kirk Kumbier, Spiegel, Rion and Sayre finished second in 1:47.93.

In the 200 individual medley, Kirk Kumbier was the winner in 2:06.31, again lowering his state qualifying time. Steavenson placed third in 2:10.10, beating the state standard, as well. Butler also scored for the Dreads in fifth place.

Sayre placed fourth for Dexter in the 50 freestyle, recording a time of 24.29.

In the one-meter diving competition, Crompton placed fourth, accumulating 177.90 points. Presley, in fifth, once again achieved a personal best with 127.95 points.

Spiegel was the victor in the 100 butterfly, touching in 1:00.81, while Rion picked up third.

The Dreadnaughts placed three swimmers in the 100 freestyle. Verna led the charge in second place, followed by Sayre in third and Tim Pituch in fifth.

In the 200 sprint relay, the squadron of Kirk Kumbier, Sayre, Spiegel and Verna placed second in 1:36.13. Karl Kumbier, Dyer, Wiltse and Cook joined forces to place third.

Steavenson earned his state cut in the 100 backstroke with a winning time of 1:00.28. Rion also scored for Dexter in fourth place.

In the 100 breaststroke, Kirk Kumbier brought his state time down to 1:02.49 in finishing second. Wilson placed fifth for the Dreadnaughts.

Verna, Wiltse, Spiegel, and Steavenson combined for second place in the 400 freestyle relay. Karl Kumbier, Dyer, Wooton, and Wilson teamed up for third.

"It is always tough to go into another school's pool on Senior Night and swim well," said Dexter coach Michael McHugh. "We did a great job of staying focused and swimming fast. I am really proud of all of them. "With each meet we are getting more and more prepared for the upcoming championship season. We are starting to get guys in their best events and they are swimming really well. "We have less than three weeks until (the) SEC (meet), so at this point the work has been done. Now it is time to start focusing on swimming fast and preparing our bodies and minds to be ready when (the) SEC (meet) comes up."

Dexter next travels to Chelsea Friday for a meet at 6:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the Dreadnaughts participate in the Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association Invitational at Eastern Michigan University at noon.

On Tuesday, Dexter hosts Ann Arbor Huron at 6:30 p.m.

On Feb. 15, the Dreadnaughts host Tecumseh for Senior Night at 6:30 p.m.
