Dreadnaught cagers suffer frustrating week

By Don Richter, Sports Editor

PUBLISHED: February 7, 2008

It was a frustrating stretch for Dexter's boys' basketball team last week. The Dreadnaughts came out on the losing end of three games in which the outcome was in doubt late in the fourth quarter.

"It was a tough eight days," said Dexter coach Randy Swoverland. "To go through three end-of-game situations and not even get a shot up is killing me."

On Feb. 2, host Dexter (7-7, 4-6 Southeastern Conference) lost a heartbreaking 64-63 overtime game to Ann Arbor Huron.

In the first quarter, the Dreadnaughts and River Rats each scored 16 points.

In the second quarter, Dexter netted 17 points, while holding Huron to 12 points, taking a 33-28 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Dreadnaughts continued increasing their lead, outscoring the River Rats 15-9 and opening up a 48-37 margin heading into the fourth frame.

In the fourth quarter, Huron rallied scoring 19 points, while limiting Dexter to eight points and tying the game at 56-56 forcing overtime.

In the extra session, the River Rats outscored the Dreads 8-7 for the night's final outcome.

"We had an 11-point lead to start the fourth quarter," Swoverland said. "Huron turned up the pressure and took the lead by four. Then we came back and took the lead by one point. Huron then drove, got fouled and made the one free throw with less than 10 seconds left."

The free throw sent the game into overtime.

With three seconds left and a chance to pull out the victory, Dexter's out-of-bounds play went awry as Huron forced a turnover as time ran out.

"We played well with the exception of the fourth quarter," Swoverland said.

Leading the Dreadnaughts against the River Rats was freshman center Dave LaMore. The 6-foot-6, 195-pound center poured in 21 points and hauled down eight rebounds for Dexter.

Senior post player Dave Pisano (6-5, 235) added 17 points forming a potent 1-2 combination down low for the Dreadnaughts.

"They both had good games," Swoverland said.

Senior guard T.J. Fenske (6-1) had 10 points, including two triples, while junior guard Ryan Lemasters (5-10) had seven points and seven assists for Dexter.

Junior guard Steve Muchmore (5-10) finished with four points, while junior forward Dan Newell (6-4) and sophomore guard Stefan Elslager (5-10) each scored two points for the Dreadnaughts.

Last Thursday, visiting Dexter lost to Adrian 56-40.

With three minutes remaining in the game, the Dreadnaughts trailed 43-40.

"We proceeded to not score a point in the last three minutes," Swoverland said. "We had bad shooting and turnovers throughout the night."

The Maples led 14-12 after the first quarter.

At halftime, Adrian continued leading 26-24.

In the third quarter, the Maples increased their advantage to 32-28.

In the fourth frame, Adrian outscored Dexter 24-12 for the game's ending tally.

Fenske and Lemasters each scored 11 points for the Dreads. Fenske had three triples.

Pisano had eight points and 10 rebounds, while LaMore had five points, Muchmore three points and Newell two points.

On Jan. 29, Dexter lost to host Saline 50-47.

The game was tied at 47-47 when the Dreads threw the ball away with two seconds left.

"Then they threw the ball in and Kyle Larsen (6-4, 215 center) threw up a three-pointer from the corner banking it in," Swoverland said. "That was his first three-pointer of the year."

At halftime, the Hornets led 23-18.

Entering the fourth quarter, Saline led 37-30.

In the fourth frame, Dexter outscored the Hornets 17-13.

Pisano paced the Dreadnaughts with 14 points.

Lemasters had 13 points, while Fenske had 12 points, including two triples, Elslager five points and Newell three points.

Dexter next travels to Ann Arbor Huron for a contest Friday at 7 p.m.

On Tuesday, the Dreadnaughts visit Temperance Bedford for a game at 7 p.m.

On Feb. 15, Dexter travels to Tecumseh for a match-up Friday at 7 p.m.

Freshman Basketball

Dexter's freshman boys' basketball team lost to Ann Arbor Huron 62-40 last Saturday.

The River Rats raced out to a 30-17 first half lead.

Travis Chaffee led the Dreadnaughts (2-10) with nine points. Tyler Dunham added seven points.

On Jan. 31, Dexter lost to Adrian 56-45.

The Maples led 30-20 at the break.

Brian Bentz sparked the Dreadnaughts with a season-high 22 points. Alex Wallace chipped in a season-high eight points.

On Jan. 29, Dexter lost to Saline 42-28.

The Hornets led 32-18 entering the fourth quarter.

Bentz led the Dreads with 10 points. Dan Kedroske had seven points.

"We can't seem to play four quarters of basketball," said Dexter coach Jason Miller. "We play really well one or two quarters and then their enthusiasm is not there in the other two quarters."
