Dexter wrestling celebrated Parents Night and Senior Night last Thursday hosting a tri-meet with Adrian and Ann Arbor Pioneer.

Against the Maples, the Dreadnaughts (19-14, 4-4 Southeastern Conference) lost 36-35.

"It came down to bonus points," said Dexter coach Shane Rodriguez. "They won seven matches and we won seven matches. One of their victories was on a void."

Rodriguez said Adrian is a strong program.

"They always wrestle tough," he said. "Winning was within our grasp. It (loss) was disappointing."

The meet began at 145 pounds with Dexter's Mark Bertsos winning 6-4 in overtime against Gabe Negron.

At 152, Chase Stevens lost by pin in 3:22 to the Maples' Rafeal Rodriguez.

Dreadnaught Nick Chaconas lost by pin in 3:25 to Logan Vernor at 160.

Jeff Soto won by void at 171 for Adrian.

Mike Swager won by pin in 4:47 over Andrea White at 189 for Dexter.

Andrew Swanteck lost 5-2 to Derek Hoffman at 215.

At heavyweight, Corey Chamberlain won a 14-5 major decision over Mo Jasper for the Dreadnaughts.

At 103, Derek Fead lost by pin in 4:19 to Zach Gaza.

Gabe Altomare won by pin in 3:56 over Adrian's Andrew Sutter at 112.

"That was huge," Rodriguez said. "He (Altomare) was filling in for (starter) Dan Flowers who had lost to Sutter earlier in the season."

At 119, Dexter's Anthony Chisolm won by pin in 2:50 over Jake Simmons. Chisolm was also filling in for an injured starter.

"That's what made me happy," Rodriguez said. "Our back-up kids came in and scored points. That means our program is headed in the right direction."

At 125, defending state champion Bret Marsh defeated the Maples' Matt Galvin on a 15-1 major decision. Marsh's overall record now stands at a still unblemished 42-0 for the year.

Brandon Saunders pinned Tom Hutchison in 3:15 for the Dreadnaughts at 130.

Evan Oxner lost by pin in 3:13 to Adrian's Theo White at 135.

With one match remaining, Dexter led by two points.

At 140, despite a heroic effort, Dreadnaught Andrew Collins lost 3-1 to the Maples' Wes Verner.

"It was a really tight match tied at 1-1 with 30 seconds left," Rodriguez said. "Verner was able to take down Collins to win the match and the dual match."

In its second meet, Dexter dominated Ann Arbor Pioneer winning 61-12.

The match started at 160 with Chaconas pinning Carl Olsen in 2:32.

At 171, both teams voided.

At 189, Swager earned a 10-4 major decision over Ben Kinch.

Swantek won by void at 215.

Chamberlain won by disqualification over Mo Mofid at heavyweight.

At 103, Fead pinned Jake Peck in 1:45.

"That was nice for Derek because Peck had beaten him last weekend at a tournament," Rodriguez said.

Altomare won on a 15-0 technical fall over Andrew Dorsey at 112.

Chisolm won by void at 119.

Marsh won a 13-0 major decision over Tom Brosnaham at 125.

At 130, Saunders pinned Miguel Gonzalez in 4:28.

"If I had to pick one wrestler that has made the most improvement it's been Saunders," Rodriguez said.

Oxner lost by pin in 1:29 to Will Jackson at 135.

At 140, Collins won by pin in 2:35 over Alex Kinch.

Bertsos won by pin in 1:25 over Frank Diaz at 145.

At 152, Stevens lost by pin in 2:42 to Justin Bose.

"We had a good night," Rodriguez said. "We're starting to go in the right direction as a team."

Dexter next travels to Tecumseh to compete in the SEC meet Saturday at 9 a.m.
